Painting Crash Course?

I have a couple scratches on my ILX already on the side mirror. I ordered a paint kit to fix it choosing the exact model and color. It comes with the paint, a primer, and a finisher.

Is it as simple as cleaning the area, priming it, painting it, then applying the finisher or are there more things to do? Are there any caveats when doing touch up painting?

I've never done any kind of self-painting before and don't want the mirror to look worse when I'm done than before I started. Thanks!

I would try this first:

Obviously you don't have to use the same products.

Thanks! You saved me a lot of work and worry. Was able to get the side scratches off fairly easily and unless you look really closely, you wouldn't know they were there (i.e. I can see them but passengers don't notice).
