Acura cancels hybrid version for 2015

I am sure with the refresh next year there may be some changes (potentially with the powertrain)

http://www.automobilemag.com/feature...dead-for-2015/

Article:
Acura is paring down its compact ILX sedan lineup to just two models, as the Acura ILX Hybrid model will not return for 2015. Brand representatives told us that this change is meant to better align the ILX with consumer demand, which isn't too surprising considering that out of 9217 Acura ILX models sold so far in 2014, only 730 of those were hybrids.

The Acura ILX Hybrid used a similar powertrain to the Honda Civic Hybrid, pairing a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist mild hybrid system. The more expensive Acura ILX Hybrid couldn’t match the Civic Hybrid’s EPA fuel economy numbers, though, as the ILX was rated at only 38 mpg combined compared with the Civic’s 45 mpg. Considering the ILX’s $4370 price premium over the more efficient Civic Hybrid, this equation did not seem to add up for most hybrid buyers.

The demise of the ILX Hybrid is also unsurprising considering that Honda is moving away from its Integrated Motor Assist mild hybrid system in favor of more advanced, full hybrid systems like the two-motor hybrid powertrain found in the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid or the three-motor Sport Hybrid system in the Acura RLX. Honda’s IMA-powered models are slowly dying off, with the Honda Insight being discontinued this year, and the Honda CR-Z hybrid hatchback not likely to stick around for much longer.

This leaves the 2015 Acura ILX with two powertrain options: a 150-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated with a five-speed automatic transmission, and a more powerful 201-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder which comes exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission. This compact luxury sedan is otherwise unchanged for 2015 other than slight price increases across the lineup. The 2.0-liter model starts at $27,945, and the 2.4-liter model costs $30,245, both representing a $150 increase over last year.

The 2015 Acura ILX goes on sale this week, so if you’re looking to snag a leftover 2014 Acura ILX Hybrid, the clock is ticking.

Not surprised. If my 2013 hybrid tech was totaled/stolen/gone/etc, I wouldn't get another one to replace it. One of the advantages of leasing, 18 months from now I can try again with something new.

Yeah, saw this in the press release from Honda News this morning. Also not surprised, after having driven the ILX Hybrid. Looks like 2.0 and 2.4 are carryovers from 2014 -> 2015 with exception of a color change. Polished Metal Metallic becomes Modern Steel Metallic. I guess 2016 will be the next big change year for ILX.

I like the loss of PMM. Makes the color a little more wanted possibly. Though I still wish I had amber brownstone -_-

Losing the hybrid doesnt matter much to me except now the hybrid features, i.e. the spoiler and grills, will probably not be seen again as well.

The price increase is what surprises me. I figure this means acura is seeing enough sales to raise prices and potentially lose some people. 30grand for the 2.4premium seems steep, no? I mean my ILX tech before add-ons or taxes was barely over 30. So for a dynamic that would be a good price but for a premium I dont know... Id get an SI at that point I think.

Increase in price but no changes for the 2015? Good thing I jumped on my 2.4 Premium last month.

Wow... A little concerned about the future value for my ILX Hybrid now, although I can't say the ILX Hybrid is the best car for efficiency, but it is the nicest looking hybrid you can buy loaded in the $30k to $40k range IMO.

Thank goodness I leased my hybrid! Can't wait till this term is over to get something else.

I am not surprised that Honda is discontinuing 3 hybrid models (CRZ, Insight, ILX). Seems like a big decision and a nod that maybe they are losing market share to Toyota's hybrid system based on consumer preference each of those car segments.

Insight vs. Prius. Prius wins hands down on overall product, design, and performance. Hard to dethrone the prius unless there's a new game changer in the Honda pipeline.

CRZ vs.? CRZ didn't seem to have a lot of similar competition as a 2 seater hybrid. But maybe that's why it never really took off. The two seater only doesn't make it very practical at all.

ILX hybrid vs. CT-200h. Although less money, I have seen way more CT's on the road than I have ever seen ILX's for both gas and hybrid versions. Storage space, ride quality, interior quality, and even mpg are better on the CT200h. Consumers were choosing the CT as the preferred substitute good for this class for sure, even at a higher cost. I'd argue that the CT-200h isn't that bad looking; but that's all preference.

there was an article recently about whether the hybrid premium was worth it. The author pointed out that many times it take 4-5 years and like 75k miles for the hybrid to break even with the premium price. They also mentioned that many times 2-3 years after the hybrid comes out that the traditional gas engines improve with better performance (more horsepower) where the difference is not as great.

If you compare the ILX hybrid to the Civic and the Corolla:
ILX hybrid - 38-39 mpg with 111 hp for about 30k
Civic LX - 28-39 mpg with 140hp for about 20k
Corolla L - 26-34 mpg with 132 hp for about 18k
The 2016 ILX will probably have improved hp and mpg numbers vs the current model

At this point the hybrid premium should probably go away to make sense. When the Govt gave a tax break it made sense but not anymore.

At some point I can see all vehicles having some kind of hybrid technology. With the Q50 from Infiniti having a powerful hybrid it shows that you can have hybrids that don't sacrifice performance.

Like everyone else, I'm not suprised the hybrid has been dropped. The first ILX I test drove was a hybrid and I was not impressed at all. I considered using the lower grills from the hybrid, but have been on the fence about it. I may have to buy a pair

if I remember correctly, auto manufactures are supposed to hold or have enough parts for at least 10 years.

and supply and demand is still in play. so for example, if 20 of you grab the hybrid grilles, dealers WILL notice and UP the price..

better grab them before they increase in price.
