Hey guys, anyone know what size oil filter wrench you need to pull off a 2016 ILX OEM Oil filter? I'm looking for a cheap one to buy online to do my own oil from now on. I did my oil today but left the filter alone because I couldn't pull the damned thing off. Also anyone have a link to the repair manual for this thing?

Sorry. I don't do oil changes at home. Dealer serviced. But I had thought there was nothing particularly special or unique about Acura oil filters. Maybe it was just on too tight and needs some muscle to loosen it?

 

I used to dealer service, but they have increased their prices to $120 for a oil change. And I could be wrong but it seems like they have been using normal oil and not synthetic just by the color (I hope I'm wrong there).

 

There are plenty of universal tools from local auto parts stores that you can use to remove oil filters. Shouldn't be difficult to remove an oil filter or require manuals

 

Wow, $120 for an oil change. My dealer charges about $60. They use conventional oil. The ILX does not call for synthetic in the manual. You can also look at the work order that they gave you and they should list the type of oil used. In my RDX (1st gen) they use synthetic as the manual calls for that. Those oil changes are about $120 due to the added cost. Based on those prices, my dealer is pretty reasonable. They also have a nice waiting room, free muffins, fancy coffee machine, bottled water, and I get a car wash voucher to use at a local car wash.

 

Color means nothing. All 0W-20 oils are synthetic is some form or another. Most retail available 0W-20 oils are full synthetic, but Honda/Acura do offer a semi-synthetic 0W-20 oil.

I change the oil in all my cars (and my father-in-law as well). Changing oil on the K24 is really very easy. I would recommend Mobil 1 AFE 0W-20 and a Fram Ultra XG7317 filter (or the Mobil 1 M-110 filter if you get a Mobil 1 oil special).

The first time to remove the oil filter on an Acura or Honda has always been difficult. They must screw that thing on to like 1000 ft-lb of torque (jk)!

What trim of 2019 ILX did you get? I really like the latest A-spec design.

Medium sized Channel Locks. They're my oil filter wrench, brake piston reset tool, hose clamp pliers, etc etc.

 

Also for filters, the Denso 150-2006 has been my go-to for the past I don't know how many years. They sell for like $3.50 a pop on rock auto. I usually buy 12 at a time (since my G37 can take the same filter too). Premium quality at a banging price. For standard service stuff, the Premium Guard PG4612 is also a really good filter and can be had for about $1-1.50/ea. They're essentially Group 7/Purolator filters.
