SED Technology
SED Technology

Anyone know anything about this? Couldn't find an existing thread.
Apparently the quaility of plasma at half the price?
Large flat-screen televisions for digital broadcasting are currently the focus of much attention. Heralded as the new generation of high-quality large flat-screen display, the SED (Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display), jointly developed by Canon and Toshiba Corporation, is almost ready for practical application. Its greatest feature is the ability to produce vivid color images that surpass conventional types of display. Also, the SED delivers exceptional overall image quality—fast video-response performance, high contrast, high gradation levels—and low power consumption.
Apparently the quaility of plasma at half the price?
"SED Inc. However, fate has brought these two seemingly friendly corporations in to a battle for a better SED-TV. That’s right; SED-TV will be available from BOTH. Who will become the leading company to place their name on it? Well, that part is up to us."
Strange, since all SED TV's will be manufactured from only one plant in Japan.

The demo looks promising...

I don't know much about it.
However, until some big manufacturers get on board and start selling the stuff... it seems like a pipe dream.
Fact is, we already have BETTER displays with LCoS/SXRD, but both are floundering and people are still buying inferior DLP/LCD tech.
Unless there's demand for SED, prices would probably never come within range for normal folk... which would pretty much seal the fate of the technology.

I'm more interested in this technology for computer monitors rather than TV's. I've read that this technology might give customers an option to Eizo's CG220 being the only monitor on the market that can display the aRGB color gamut. I'd love to have one on my desk, but $5200 USD is a little steep.
It'll be a sad sad day when my 21" Sony CRT dies.
Other than the CG220, no LCD comes close to the Sony for color gamut, contrast, or uniform brightness.
