Samsung DLP TV Problems
I have the Samsung HLP5685W DLP TV. I was watching it and then all of a sudden I heard this glass shattering sound in the back of the tv and then the screen goes blank and there is no sound coming out. What is the problem? Do I need to replace the lamp or color wheel? I ordered a new lamp and I think I can install it myself but I am not sure about the color wheel. i know its more complicating. Anyone ever experience this problem?

My best guess based on your information is that the lamp cracked. The color wheel typically makes a high-pitched squealing noise when it goes bad and it is gradual.

Well, the color wheel is glass too but it is not very big. I would guess the lamp blew. You can check it in less than 2 mins start to finish.
I replaced my lamp and color wheel when the wheel started to go bad. It makes a very high pitched sound because of run down bearrings.

If it's blows you will get no picture. What you are referring to is the lamp degrading over time; it slowly loses it's output.
If the bulb exploded it's due to a hot spot on the glass. Hot spots are caused from foreign material on the glass;oils, water, dust buildup... Same principal applies when you change the headlights on your car. Your not suppose to touch the glass bulb for the same reason... the oil that gets transfered from your skin causes a hot spot.
Probably just a bit of bad luck...
