Which samsung to buy?

My Dad is finally ready to purchase a new tv, so he picked out a couple models that he thinks would be good. He is looking for a LCD or Plasma for around $2000 (It can be +/- $500). The two Plasma models he is looking at are..

Samsung HP-s5053
Samsung HP-s5073

Anyone own either of these models or have any opinions? I looked at amazon and cnet reviews and both got pretty good reviews. The 5073 is a couple hundred more expensive, but I am unsure if it is worth it Any opinions on which one to get? Thanks!

I would go with the 5053. I don't think the 5073 is worth another $500. I'm sure he'll be satisfied with the 5053.

I'm not a huge plasma fan. If he's stuck on Samsung I'd show him the 46" or 52" LCD's. The 46" will run from $2100-$2500 and has a better picture, IMO. Panasonic also makes a nice 50" plasma.

It's a matter of opinions, as I think Plasma's have a far better image than LCD. Really depends on one's eye.

If I were in the market in that price range, I would look towards something more like this:

Spending the extra little bit for the Pioneer is absolutely worth it at $2519.

Yeah he is really set on getting 50" plus.. I honestly don't think HE would notice a difference in a 46" and a 50". He also mentioned the LN-S5296D, but the MSRP on that is $5000 and I don't think he needs to spend that much on a TV.

I just searched and found the Samsung LN-S4692D.. any opinions on this one?

No preference really.. I just thought I read somewhere on here that Sony or Samsung is the way to go? I really only see people talking about Samsung (except for what you said above). I did right down your suggestion though and I plan to pass it along to my Dad.

Do you own a Pioneer or any reason why you suggest that model? Thanks.

I don't own a Pioneer. Basically because until recently their prices were out of reach. They are considered to be among the best in the business. I install many different brands and always come back to Pioneer when people ask what I consider to have the best image quality. Even hardcore Samsung fans (ahem, Juniorbean) will admit that Pioneer is among the top quality sets. Samsung is considered a lower tier (although a very good one at that) by people in the business. I am not trying to stear you clear of them by any means, but I just thought you should open up to some other possibilities. And in that price range you mentioned, I would HIGHLY recommend the Pioneer.

Ah sounds good. Like I said above, I'll tell my Dad to look into that Pioneer and see what he thinks. In the end though he really needs to go see his top 3 TVs and see which one he likes the best. Thanks for the help though!

Absolutely, he should definitely go look at them before he decides. Whichever one HE likes is what he should get. Just keep in mind that different tv's will display different forms of signal better than others. One reason I like the Pioneer is how well it handles standard definition picture. Most people do not watch only HD yet, so something that handles what they do watch well is important. When he goes to the store, they will only be displaying HD, so see if you can get them to show him regular standard def as well, it may make a big difference in his decision.

I purchased S5053 back in late October and loved it since!!!! I couldn't be happier with my choice. This 5073 must be new and I haven't really kept up with TV's since my purchase (because I'm so busy watching mine)... but yea, I would highly recommend going plasma and S5053 model from my personal experience. I bought mine from Amazon which saved me well over $700 compared to bestbuy or Circuitcity b/c Amazon offers 30 days match-price on their own price tag!!!. I was able to get credit of $220 back.

Like I said, I don't know much differences between these two models but if your dad is only looking to use it as watching TV, Movies and nothign spectacular like hooking up computers or playing games, I don't see additional $500 worth it.
