Price gouging on Amazon?

I got this Panasonic VCR/DVD Recorder back in February. Its a great unit I only got it for the DVD Recorder, VCR and the 80 GB hard drive, but it also downloads TV guide listings from your Cable Box directly to the unit which allows you to easily schedule recordings from the menu, so it works a lot like TIVO without the monthly fee. I never used the DVD for other than recording, since I already have a standalone that I use for watching DVD's.
Anyway, I got it for around $400 from Circuity City (open box), and it retailed at $500. However Amazon now has it for a "sale" price for $999 (originally $1499
) when it used to be around $500.
My unit is still working fine so I don't need another one, just very confused on why the supposed sale price is DOUBLE what it was originally.
