New Flat Screen

The upstairs/bedroom TV took a dump. So, we went out and got an LG 42" LCD - model 42LB5D.

http://www.us.lge.com/products/model/detail/tv|audio|video___42LB5D__30-47.html

Reviews/Ratings look OK. Anybody with personal experience? Good TV?

It's our first HD quality Flatscreen, so I am sure it'll be a step up.

TIA.

Uhhmm, stupidity? This was somewhat of an "impulse" buy; IOW - we didn't do much research.

Honestly there was a Samsung I had picked out that had similar tech specs was ~$100 less and was (I think) a 40" instead of a 42". The response rate on the Samsung was a tad slower as well.

But, She Who Must Be Obeyed wanted the 42". Looked like this LG was the best Value (cost/features/specs) in that size. At the end of the day, it's primarily used for her TAN Dish (foreign language programming), so I don't mind that she got what wanted.

Really wondering if others have the same (or similar) model and are happy with it.

Is her "foreign language programming" even available in HD?

Excellent question. I don't know. It's digital, but I don't think it's HD. OTOH - one of the LG features is supposed to improve non-HD signals to near-HD quality.

Six distinct processes contribute to picture improvement. LG’s XD Engine™ takes the low resolution of analog signals to near HD levels by improving brightness, contrast, detail and enhancing color as well as reducing signal noise. This total solution results in cinema-like high resolution images.
Also, our regular cable has an HD Channels package. I know we can connect both (the satellite and the cable), but don't know if we'll get the HD Channel upgrade right away.

Ask them to define "near"

You can't increase the number of pixels something is broadcast in on your TV. Sure it might look good. But it won't be HD.
