Narrowed down to two

I'm thinking I might be ordering a TV tomorrow or Saturday.
I've narrowed down to two, and just thought I'd get some input.

Both Samsung LCD's

LN46B750...

Or, UN46B6000

LN46B750 - $1429
UN46B6000 - $1599

Here's some of the pros and cons I've researched so far.

The UN is one of the super-thin LCD's utilizing the side mounted LED's. Only 1.2" thick. The LN is average in that regard. However, I know there has been considerable talk about the side lit LCD's having rather noticeable lighting uniformity issues, whereas the LN uniformity is considerably better. Picture performance from what I understand is fairly equal.

Anyone have experience with either or hearsay they would like to input? I'm gonna go to Best Buy before I commit to one to take a look at both again, but I'm gonna buy from Amazon. Not that Best Buy is exactly the best place for evaluating picture performance, but it says a little.

You just have to look at the sets in person. You probably already know this, but you will need to take the sets off of "brilliant" mode in BB to really see how they perform, unless you like to like watch TV at retina-scorching levels.

I bought my Mitsu 52" from Amazon and it was a very good purchase experience.

I had it narrowed down to these 2 tvs also. I was close to getting the 750. After everyone suggesting plasma I went that route and did some research. I ended up getting a Samsung PN50b650. Its just amazing. I have a Sony 40" Xbr in the bedroom and it just doesn't look the same after watching the plasma.

But to answer your question I liked the 750 better, PQ was about the same as the 6000 and the 750 for like 200 cheaper...

I'd get the 750 if it was me. I love the LED"s for the thin factor, but I just read too many complaints about flashlighting and dark corners. I also can't stand the red TOC. If I was buying a new TV I'd get a 750, if money were no object, I'd get the 8500.

Oh snap. I placed the order.

Interestingly enough, I ended up not getting either I originally posted.

Even more interesting (and somewhat surprising to myself) is it's a plasma. I swore I would've gone LCD. Between lower energy consumption, less heat, longer life, less potential for f'k ups when moving it, I thought LCD was the way to go.

I was woo'd over though. Unusual for a plasma, it has the same slim form factor (1.2" deep) as the new LED lit LCD's, but doesn't have the uniformity issues. There's only one issue that quite a number have people have had with it, and I was willing to gamble. Apparently, the set has a characteristic design flaw which seems to cause I'd guess maybe a third of the sets (from what I've read of reviews) to have a high pitched buzz much louder than "typical" with plasmas to the point of it being exchange/return worthy. Sounds like Samsung has very accommodating service techs who will come out and try to solve the problem from things I've read. If it does happen to buzz on me, their solution is a little rubber washer inside the frame. The buzz is said to come from a metal flap that is in or around where the ventilation fan is. The noise has driven some people nuts, but I'm that my set won't even have the buzz. Other than that, the only other thing that I could think of worth mentioning, is that it doesn't have that Touch of Color bullshit. I'm a happy camper. Pics will be posted once it arrives. Scheduled for Wednesday I believe.

I'm personally going for a panasonic 42" G10 plasma. At ~$930 it's a great bargain for a highly reviewed TV

might save up and splurge for a V series

I also looked at those.
And to be honest, from what I read, on paper the G is about the same, maybe a little better actually. The V definitely. If the V was the same price point, I would've gone with that one.

The V had fairly noticeable better black levels and shadow detail. It was over $1900 though for the 50". I ordered mine for $1579 total, and that was already in the top end of my range.

The V and G are both great sets though. I paid about a $300-400 premium for the slim form factor. The PN50B650 I believe was between $1100-1200 and has pretty much the exact same picture and qualities. Just not the thin form which is something I was really wanting.

Overall though, I think I'll still be happy. I'm upgrading from a 26" boob tube that I've had for a while now, so I think it'll be hard to disappoint.

Wow, I had no idea anyone made a plasma that thin.

My plasma buzzed a bit for the first few months but it seems that it doesn't anymore .

Congratulations. I know you've been eyeing up the Sammy's for a while.

I've had my 46A750 for about a year now and couldn't be happier.

I stopped in my tracks when I laid eyes on the Sammy plasma b860 at BB. I sure wished I had the cash to spring for a Samsung but I had to settle for a Sony Bravia that was on sale at Dell.com

There was a Panasonic G10 mounted a tv over from the Sony I picked up, stunning. The Samsung's were mounted high up and I wasn't able to reach the controls to play with their settings but they were also amazing.

Great set, good luck with it!

I wouldn't necessarily say you settled. Sony also makes excellent televisions.

Thanks.
And . I love that set as well. It's one that I looked at as a potential when I very started looking at the Sammy's late last year.

Awesome TV, I was thinking of the PN860 to, but I compared it against the PN650 when I started looking at plasma. Honestly I really couldn't tell difference between the 2, except for the wow factor of the thinness.

Again great tv man.

Just looked at the order status.
Apparently the starting point for the ship was/is DFW airport, and I'm about 10 minutes from there , and it says 'in transit', so I may end up getting it tomorrow instead of wednesday.

Good. My delivery date on the TV was November 18th. I got it on the 16th. Pilot was better than CEVA. When I ordered my XBR they put the tv in the door and thats it. Pilot actually helped unpack it and turned it on to see if its working.

Nice!
Good to hear. White glove delivery is nice, especially for something like this. If for whatever reason, it was DOA or something was wrong, they could take it back on their way out.

I'm just starting to look for something, but I haven't researched audio at all, so it may be a while. Which is ok for now. I'm in an apt so I don't exactly want to piss off my neighbors......yet. :devilgrin

That being said, you have any suggestions for entry to mid level sound systems?

I am a big fan of soundbars. They are simple, look elegant, and sound great. I have the Yamaha YAS 71. Currently Compusa.com has it marked down to $250.

http://www.compusa.com/applications/...786&CatId=4597

I started a thread under home theater if you want to see a pic of the sound bar. If the Sony sound bar get cheaper I might pick one up for the bedroom.

My GOD plasma's have gotten thin. I have a Pioneer 5045HD that we bought 3 or 4 years ago and it's still got a great picture. Awesome really but not that thin and gets pretty hot. Once we bought our second house last year, it's been in a spare bedroom and is mostly used by my 6 year old son for his Wii lol. I do play blu-ray on it from time to time and that picture still amazes me. A few months ago we bought a Samsung 46 inch LED (UN46B8500) tv. Every time I view it I still feel like everything stands outside of the tv like it's 3D. Pricey as hell but couldn't even think about going with the 55 inch which was the next size up.

The wife scored a 32 inch Sony LCD 120hz on Black Friday for our bedroom. Getting back on your subject, now that I've done some research on your purchase, great buy. Wish I could sell my plasma and upgrade. I tried a year ago but prices have gone down so much I just can't part with it being that I paid 2K for mine.

I say build your own surround sound. I have a 6.1 receiver with optical/hdmi, hdmi 4 port switch running, Infinity surrounds and center channel and Klipsch 12 inch powered sub. Thought about 7.1 but what is really being done at that level. This house has high end speakers in the ceiling. Still haven't gotten a ladder to see what they are but they rock. So much so that the wife won't let me wire up my Infinity's (she doesn't want to see the wires lol) and they are pretty much going to waste in a closet but can't part with those either.

I was just in a best buy for the first time since I can remember and I was watching the dark knight BR on this set. Very nice for a plasma.

My salivary glands were REALLY watering at the 55" 8 series LED Sammy.

Got it around 5:30 this evening.
Already watched a movie on it.

Looks like I didn't get one of the "buzzer" sets. If the volume is muted, you can here it ever so slightly, but otherwise it's not really noticeable. Even during the quite scenes of the movie, I'd only notice it if I thought and focused on it. Otherwise the picture was doing enough to distract me.

Bourne Identity on HD DVD.

NO BD yet.
I'll eventually have a BluRay, just not sure as to how.
In other words, not sure if I'm gonna get a stand-alone, or something like a PS3.

I've been looking at home-theater-in-a-box systems which some have BD players. Some don't. I'm a little torn in what I'll end up doing. I'm not in as much of a hurry as I thought. The sound on the TV is actually a lot better than I was expecting. Not that it's 5.1 or anything, but it's not bad. However, there's a number of routes I could take.

For example. There are HTIB sets that have of course the speakers, and then a BD player which acts as the receiver. I actually saw one HTIB system that had a full blown Yamaha receiver (and it was decently priced). It came with a 5.1 setup, but because it has a full blown receiver, you could later upgrade your speakers if you like. You couldn't do that with basic HTIB systems. With something like that though, you would have to buy a stand-alone BD player (or PS3), assuming you wanted it. So I'm not sure. I'm not gonna be getting a sound system for a bit. I'm thinking maybe a birthday gift from the parents (or myself ) in April would be a good time.

We'll see.

I guess that was quite a response to your question. lol
I also just watched an episode of Planet Earth on HD DVD.
