If you go to CES all of the big TV manufacturers have a OLED prototype. Sony and a few others already have OLED displays in their lineup for next year. Sadly they are small screens... 27" or so. And the cost is like 7x of current LCD screens of the same size. But that's to be expected of any new technology...

SED was more of a pipe dream. Luckily OLED is cheap to produce in the long term; so it's a viable investment. And lucky for us OLED is superior to SED in terms of picture quality.
True, true. I do believe that OLED is a very viable technology, unlike SED. But I see it as the next thing after LCD and plasma flat-panels.

Funny you should say this. I ventured over there to find good calibration settings for my 46" Samsung LCD. I applied the most popular settings and my TV looked dark and blurry. The videophiles always turn off every one of the "special" functions (dynamic contrast, DNIe, etc.) and they all had the sharpness setting at 20 out of 100.

I guess they strive to get the most "realistic" picture, but why turn down the sharpness? Maybe they all have poor vision?

I've always wondered about the whole sharpness thing

Sharpess probably helps out on analog signals a ton. And LCDs tend to get grainy and distorted looking with too much sharpness applied.

You really need to bring up a sharpness calibration screen on your TV and see how it effects it as you change the sharpness to be 100% certain.

The way I understand it, turning up the sharpness causes the display to add artificial details. Video enthusiasts don't like adding anything artificial to the picture, hence the overwhelming sentiment on AVS to turn off all the artificial enhancements. I used the setting on my plasmas to what AVS had but found it just a tad too soft. Instead of -8, I use -4 sharpness.

Everything is artificial! I'll never confuse my TV with a window. Might as well make it as pleasing to the eye as possible. I think you're right, it's a whole traditionalist mindset. But I find the AVS settings to be mushy, especially in SD where the PQ needs all the help it can get.

Nope not yet... It's still on my list of things to buy though. With out home purchase this year it's dropped a bit in priority

Costco sells it; I look for it every time I go in. But I never see it. If I do I'll but it on the spot.

From the reviews I read it looks to be really good though.

-------------

Side note the Avia calibration DVD and or DVE will have a sharpness calibration screen. Even with a nice video on how to adjust it properly

Sorry

To get back on topic; you should checkout Samsungs new LED backlight LCD displays. The LEDs help give the set awesome blacks and a better color gamut.

Here's the 57" in the series.

Those prices are a little nuts. $5,000 for a 52"?

I think local dimming is the wave of the future for LCDs, but, my God, those prices need to come down.

^^^ I agree with both of you. If my TV were to die today that's what I want (but in a 60" or bigger). But I wouldn't want to spend the $$ they are asking.... and they don't make a 60"+ model.

Hopefully prices will come down. I think that TV is probably the best of what's LCD today.

I was going to BB with my checkbook in hand to pick up a 37" TV. Once I was there, I was like fXXXXX. Shopping for TV used to be easy. So, I headed back to my home empty handed.

I was planning to get a Sharp 37" 1080p from Costco.

But...

After hours and days of google, I found out that LCD had all these clouding, banding, flashlighting thingy, and this set was too green and that set was too red, and game lag, etc., etc.

I am confused.... help me pick please!

I'm thinking about checking out the Samsung 50" Slim 1080P DLP at bestbuy for $1150-1200 if you buy an xbox 360 & halo 3 (which ive been thinking about getting as well). It's a pretty damn good deal if you ask me.

scratch that.

i'm in the market and am now leaning heavily towards plasma after doing some research.

i'm liking the new 8G Pioneer's. The PRO-150FD to be exact.

i was considering the 81-series LED back-lit LCD's by Samsung, but after reading preliminary reports from many owners at AVS Forum i've decided to shy away from the 1st gen technology for now. that and the fact that i need a new TV asap and most are sticking to MSRP on the highly hyped 81-series.

Ah, I thought something happened to it. I just put in a PDP-6010 at a customers house. It's the 1080p 60" set. Pretty nice. I think it would be perfect for you.

what are your thoughts on the PDP-6010 vs the 60" ELITE model, the PRO-150FD?

I don't see any reason to spend the extra on the Elite to be honest. You will get basically the same panel for less cash and you will be happy with it. It is a great set. I haven't had a ton of time spent with this model, as I have only installed one of the 6010 so far, and we are putting a whole Elan system in the house so everything really isn't fully up and running yet. Can't wait to finish though, they are getting some nice Triad speakers in the ceiling, should sound really good. FYI, don't install a 60" plasma over a fireplace in a cutout that gives you only an inch on all sides. It was a PAIN IN THE ASS to mount. Back on topic though, I'd defiinitely recommend the set. From the little I did see, great picture (as do all Pioneers really).

From what I understand, the Elite and non-Elite use the same panel, glass and chassis. The difference is the non-Elite has many settings in the service menu while the Elite has the settings in the user menu.

But here are the differences:

- Home Media Gallery - networking functionality
- ISFccc
- New Independent Gamma Control for heightened color calibration
- Remote Control - Illuminated / Present Mode / Learning Mode
- AV Selection Memory - PURE, ISF-Day, ISF-Night
- Advanced Picture-in-Picture (4 positions), Picture-side-Picture for use with Home Media Gallery & Broadcast (3 positions) and Still Picture capability
- Intelligent Mode (off/on)
- Color Temperature Adjustment – 5 settings (High / Mid-High / Mid / Mid-Low / Low)
- Color Temperature Manual Adjustment
- Color Management
- Color Space (1 / 2)
- MPEG Noise Reduction
- Block Noise Reduction Activation (off/on)
- Mosquito Noise Effect
- Mosquito Noise Reduction (off/on)
- 3 DYC (1/2/3)
- I-P Mode
- IR Repeater
- 2 year warranty
- First Color Pro Filter versus First Color Pro Plus Filter

Of those two Pioneers I would go with the 6010 simply because of the speaker placement. I've got a major hang-up as far as speakers on panels. I like that the speaker is on the bottom as opposed to the left and right. I'm so anal about it that mine has no speakers at all because it's a monitor.

the speakers on both are removable, and they would be removed.

if they werent, yes i agree, they look better on the bottom.

thanks for the info guys.

the prices for the elite/non-elite are in actuality very similar. unfortunately the elite model is out of stock everywhere that sells below MSRP.

i don't know if i can wait 30 days+.
