LCD vs. Plasma

If you go to CES all of the big TV manufacturers have a OLED prototype. Sony and a few others already have OLED displays in their lineup for next year. Sadly they are small screens... 27" or so. And the cost is like 7x of current LCD screens of the same size. But that's to be expected of any new technology...
SED was more of a pipe dream. Luckily OLED is cheap to produce in the long term; so it's a viable investment. And lucky for us OLED is superior to SED in terms of picture quality.

I guess they strive to get the most "realistic" picture, but why turn down the sharpness? Maybe they all have poor vision?

I've always wondered about the whole sharpness thing
Sharpess probably helps out on analog signals a ton. And LCDs tend to get grainy and distorted looking with too much sharpness applied.
You really need to bring up a sharpness calibration screen on your TV and see how it effects it as you change the sharpness to be 100% certain.

I used the setting on my plasmas to what AVS had but found it just a tad too soft. Instead of -8, I use -4 sharpness.

Nope not yet... It's still on my list of things to buy though. With out home purchase this year it's dropped a bit in priority

Costco sells it; I look for it every time I go in. But I never see it. If I do I'll but it on the spot.
From the reviews I read it looks to be really good though.
-------------
Side note the Avia calibration DVD and or DVE will have a sharpness calibration screen. Even with a nice video on how to adjust it properly
Looks like OLED starts this year! 11" to start in japan... wonder what it's price will be.

Sorry
To get back on topic; you should checkout Samsungs new LED backlight LCD displays. The LEDs help give the set awesome blacks and a better color gamut.
Here's the 57" in the series.

I think local dimming is the wave of the future for LCDs, but, my God, those prices need to come down.

^^^ I agree with both of you. If my TV were to die today that's what I want (but in a 60" or bigger). But I wouldn't want to spend the $$ they are asking.... and they don't make a 60"+ model.

Hopefully prices will come down. I think that TV is probably the best of what's LCD today.

I was going to BB with my checkbook in hand to pick up a 37" TV. Once I was there, I was like fXXXXX. Shopping for TV used to be easy. So, I headed back to my home empty handed.
I was planning to get a Sharp 37" 1080p from Costco.
But...
After hours and days of google, I found out that LCD had all these clouding, banding, flashlighting thingy, and this set was too green and that set was too red, and game lag, etc., etc.
I am confused.... help me pick please!

My 52" has a picture that is to die for.
I'm thinking about checking out the Samsung 50" Slim 1080P DLP at bestbuy for $1150-1200 if you buy an xbox 360 & halo 3 (which ive been thinking about getting as well). It's a pretty damn good deal if you ask me.

i'm in the market and am now leaning heavily towards plasma after doing some research.
i'm liking the new 8G Pioneer's. The PRO-150FD to be exact.
i was considering the 81-series LED back-lit LCD's by Samsung, but after reading preliminary reports from many owners at AVS Forum i've decided to shy away from the 1st gen technology for now. that and the fact that i need a new TV asap and most are sticking to MSRP on the highly hyped 81-series.

Of those two Pioneers I would go with the 6010 simply because of the speaker placement. I've got a major hang-up as far as speakers on panels. I like that the speaker is on the bottom as opposed to the left and right. I'm so anal about it that mine has no speakers at all because it's a monitor.

if they werent, yes i agree, they look better on the bottom.
thanks for the info guys.
the prices for the elite/non-elite are in actuality very similar. unfortunately the elite model is out of stock everywhere that sells below MSRP.
i don't know if i can wait 30 days+.
