Latest generation flat panel LCD vs Plasma

There is good info on the net about these competing technologies, but most seems to be out dated (6 months is out dated as far as I'm concerned). I've read that LCD cant comepete with Plasma in terms of black level, grey scaling, some color reproduction and angled viewing. And of course Plasma is cheaper. It seems that to date, Plasma was the clear cut choice for big screens and LCD for small screens.

But with the new 40 and 46 inch LCD's out, prices dropping, and the maturing of it as a technology, is LCD now the way to go in terms of flat panel?

I think Plasma still has the edge in some areas, but the gap is closing. When you add in the potential burn in problems of plasma does that tip the scales towards LCD?

Thoughts?

In the long run I don't think there is going to be room for both technologies. LCD will advance to the point that LCD/plasma are both similar enough in PQ that Joe consumer won't notice a difference. What it will come down to is price. I bet LCD eventually wins the price battle just because of the sheer volume of units produced. From the iPod in your pocket to the display on your desk, they are all LCD. The prices on computer LCD displays has really come down in the last few years.

I really like my plasma but in 10 years I bet its replacement is LCD.

I'll say it again. I could never own a plasma. I am always looking at them at store and at peoples homes....I can not stand how they look. To me its awful.

When I was shooting one of the reality shows I work on I would have to stay at peoples homes over night....Many of them had new plasmas...one was a soap star with a 50" plasma and HD feed....it looked like ass.

I am not impressed with the technology behind it.

I was looking at some last week at Best Buy and IMO the plasma's looked the best. The only thing I didn't like about them was the price tag.

I mentioned in another TV thread yesterday.

They look grainy, Any type of color gradation is swirly (gas) No make/model seems to look consitent with one another.

They just drive my eyes nuts. Once in a awhile I'll see a decent one. But overall I can't stand plasma.

Having all of the technologies in our house (LCD, Plasma, DLP, CRT) I can honestly say that the plasma by far looks the best out of all of them. Now, the LCDs we have, while HD, are small (17" and 15"), so it may not be a fair comparison... but the Plasma is best followed closely by the DLP.

One very important thing to keep in mind is the tuning of the TV. I tune each TV we buy, so it looks 100x better then when I took it out of the box. A lot of times people do not touch their TVs... and in stores, they'll tune one TV to look much better then another so they can move product... so keep that in mind.

You can. I am sure there are plenty places where you can still find the Sony 40" XBR.

Its still one of the most gorgeous sets I have ever seen. My friend bought one about 2 years ago...only thing that sucks its weight. It took 3 of to lift it and get it on its base...

I still love CRT. But with the layout of the new condo my girl is buying..I'm inclined to start thinking about making the jump to something newer and thinner. question I am debating is DLP and still lose space...or LCD and hang it on the wall.

You said it! I have the 32" XBR and we recently moved and the mover is like "What's left - just the TV?" I said yeah, better grab another buddy of yours..."Nah, I can lift that - no problem" Then he tried - almost ruptured himself... he got his buddy to help.

Never thought to ask when I was in store. Just presumed they don't have any.

My 36" weights 250lbs.

Untill you are on an angle. That is the deal breaker for me. Plus I'd like to save as much space as possible in my little house

fdl, why are you asking? Are you buying a TV? If so let me know what your going with cause as you know, I'm in the market as well.

A hanging TV is becoming increasingly tempting for me as well.

The TV I have right now is definately "temporary". So , ya I'm buying a new TV for sure. But knowing me, I'm going to obsess over the research and it will be hard to decide what to go with. Right now I'm leaning towards a 42 inch plasma.

The angled viewing on the good, larger DLP units is actually pretty decent from what I've seen.

Go look at the 40" Sony Bravia XBR LCD.

Well it depends on how severe of an angle. And while its good, its still not nearly as good as plasma yet. Not from what I have seen.

My basement is done, just sitting there waiting for a TV before I can use it. Damn JB and his 1080p advice.

I almost bought a 50" Sammy DLP on Friday but the 1080p police in my head forced me out of the store.

I'm just curious how you guys move these things. My dad and I need to eventually move this 40" tube up single flight of stairs that is normal door width. He said we can just smash it and bring it up in contractor bags. It was hard enought o get it down the stairs wihtout it crushing anyone.

Our 50" Sammy DLP can be viewed at very hard angles and it still produces a decent picture. I am very impressed with how hard of an angle we can setup seats and people can still see the pic no problem.

Yup, I believe both Circuit City and Best Buy have the new Sammy 1080p DLPs that support 1080p via HDMI (the new ones have two ports, one native 1080p, one native 720p)...

I'm personally waiting for the 56" Sammy DLP with 1080p and the LED light engine. I believe it's out later this year, so I'll jump on it next year after they work out the kinks . Ideally I'd like them to put the LED light engine in the 61" which I'm sure they will... just not sure if I can wait

is like the 3rd world when it comes TV's for some reason. samsung.ca only lists 1 50" 1080p DLP (HL-R5078W) and it sells for 3K up here. And Best Buy doesn't carry it Ideally I'd like to spend 2-2.5k. All their other 1080p DLP's (HL-S Series) have not yet been released in Canada and samsung support wouldn't tell me when they plan to release them.

Yup. Ideally I'd like the 61", but I think any size outside of the 56" won't be out until late this year... possibly next year.

So LED projection avoids having to replace the bulb?

Since I'm waiting, I should probly wait for this then.

Yup. They estimate the LEDs to last ~ 20,000 hours. That's a hell of a lot of TV viewing.

And after 20 hours the TV is trash? Like 60,000 for a plasma?

I think BestBuy sells it for $3299. Not sure if it's out though... I'd probably get it from a dealer and should easily be had for under $3K U.S.

Yeah...I saw the new mitsu 61" DLP 1080p at Frys next to the new 1080p Sammys.

It was supposedly playing a 1080p demo....it looked like total shit. As bad as standard def....now I didnt look to make sure the nimrods that work there hooked it up right, but I wasnt impressed with what enough to care.
