Internet Modem Question

Really NOOB question - out family room is really far from the wireless router, even with a wireless extender halfway there...

can i just pick up a internet cable modem like from best buy, get the tv cable and hook it up to my ps3?

if so, are there really any differences between models?

and if that works, can i have a modem for any cable in my house?

this is in the same house right? If so, just move the modem into the family room with the router and hardwire it.

You can only have one modem per connection (house). So, no...unless you want to pay another 35 bucks a month for another cable connection. Long ethernet cable maybe...

Do you currently have a modem and a separate wireless router, or just a modem/wireless router?

I have a modem hooked into a separate router. The router has 4 ports for wired connections, so I used one as a direct hard-wire to a desktop that is in one kid's room while my laptop runs off the wireless. You can run the router in a separate room from the modem as long as you have cabling (or if the house's rooms are pre-wired).

Otherwise, there are some wireless routers that have some pretty long ranges (i.e. range-booster models that have two or three antennas and sell for $60-$200) advertised in the Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. fliers every week.

I'm knowing no

You can only have on provisioned modem on an account unless you pay additional monthly to allow another provisioned modem on that account. I work for an ISP and we only allow one modem but will activate another for the same charge additional monthly if you seem to think that is your only option. ie: $44.00 a month for 7mb down on one modem/ip address. However, if you are severly retarded or happen to have the rare special circumstance that necessitates two modems, you can pay $88.00 a month for two modems/Ip addresses.

Just move the modem to the living room and buy a $40 usb wireless card for the desktop. Or, you can buy a power line adapter. Its about $40 and will send your internet frequency into your houses power wiring through wall plug. Plug in anywhere else in the house and you can extract that fequency. Its basically the same thing as turning all your house wiring into long ass ethernet cables.

Its only as good as the quality of your house voltage wiring. In the few circumstances i've seen it in use at my company, it worked great with zero speed loss across the building.

If you have an older home with lots of remodeling and splicing, it can become troublesome. Otherwise, it should be ok.
