HDMI Confusion (Receiver)

So, I bought my Samsung DLP and Sony Receiver before HDMI. Now, it seems that everything is comming out with 1 or 2 HDMI ports, Such as my Sony DVD player and Digital HD Cable box. My DVD player is hooked up through component video so it's not upconverting to its full potential. I know I can hook the video up through HDMI--->DVI connection for video, but that doesn't help me with sound. I don't have my home theater setup as I need new fronts and surrounds for the new house so nothing is going through the receiver.

My problem is, how does a receiver work with switching if you have more then one component such as I listed above? Does an HDMI port work as both the IN/OUT? Most receivers that I have been looking at only have 1-2 ports Max but they mention something about switching.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

If your reciever does component or HDMI switching, that means it has multiple inputs for these, but one output. For example I have an xbox 360 and my cable box running into my receiver with component, then one component connection out of the receiver into the TV. The receiver does the switching between the two sources.

I'm confused about what you are trying to do exactly... you want to hook up your DVD player to the Sony receiver, but not use the receiver for sound?

Same here. I mean, you can always get an HDMI switch which will allow you to hook up multiple components while only using 1 HDMI port on your receiver...

Thanks Beet, this clears things up for me. So basically, I am SOL since my TV doesn't have HDMI, nor does my receiver.

I was just confused about the whole switching aspect. I didin't want to go buy a HDMI Receiver with only one port if they next generation is going to have 4 HDMI ports.

Hmm... I didn't know they made switches. Looks like I'll need a new TV and receiver before I have to worry about it. I bought my 61" DLP almost 3 years ago.
