Is this a good deal?

Hey home theater guy. I'm looking at upgrading my receiver. I found these on Amazon. Is it worth buying or should I save my cash. It seems to be pretty much what I need. I do not need something with a ton of power. Just some thing better than my 10 year old Denon.

What else do you have in your home theater? What kinds of connections are you using from the other components?

HDMI for video from cable box. I would have to check the audio connections. Right now all I can hook up to my receiver are RCA's. I'm pretty sure I can use optical.

I will be getting a PS3 as my Blu Ray player next month.

And I have a 50 inch Samsung 1080P DLP.

For speakers, I have Infinity towers for front left and right. Definitive Technology Center channel. Infinity sub woofer. And for rears I have Klipsch bookshelf speakers. I'm very happy with my speakers.

I do not listen to a lot of music at home, so I need this more for home theater.

just beware with the ones lower than the 875, those have up conversion upto 720P, but they will down convert any 1080I or 1080P material.

This is incorrect. My 705 does not downconvert any 1080 signals.

Ravi,

Sounds like that receiver will fit your needs. It has two HDMI inputs. The only thing that I wasn't sure of from reading the Amazon page is how it handles audio over HDMI.

Please keep the comments coming. Based on my car audio sale, it seems I will have enough to get either something a little better or both this and my PS3.

You will want to go with at least the 605 because it support the next gen audio format (DTS:MA and TrueHD). The PS3 now support DTS:MA via a firmware flash. The 805 is a good receiver for the money. However, the Onkyo tend to get hot hot. I have the 875 and I put a fan on top of it to cool that sucka down.

^^^

I'm starting to lean towards the 605 or 705. Anything similar from a different manufacturer?

The Yamaha RX-V663. It's a little bit more expensive than the 605.

the get pretty hot, also be careful of which receiver you do pick because my buddy managed to blow out his speakers when we hooked up the 875 to his system to make sure it came in working order, boy was he pissed.

Already did. My speakers can definitely handle the upgrade. I would be pissed if I messed those up.

I probably caused a friend of mine to spend thousands on better stereo equipment because of the time I spent hanging out with him.
