The biggest disadvantage to my owning a DLP is that it is 2 years old and with so many moving parts, vulnerable to breaking down. The MTBF (mean time before failure) on the DLP chip itself is a long time. However time will tell I'm sure.... Ive always wondered about it.
The MTBF on the color wheel engine is another story. I would think keeping it in a dust free environment would help a ton. Kick the dog and the cat out of the house

I guess I've been lucky with the color wheel. I've heard stories about that squeal. 
However, about once a week the set will just turn off, as if it overheated. I removed the lamp vent and cleaned it just this morning so I'm hoping that does the trick.

And really it depends on your viewing distance and source material as well...even a 65" 1080P TV at 18' will not appear any better than a 720P 65" at 18'.

I'd be wary of the JVC sets. We have had a lot of problems with just about all JVC products lately. Several DLP's have had failures within the first week or so out of the box. One customer has had theirs break 3 times (three different sets). At this time, we are not offering any JVC's because of this.

Our neighbor (the same one mentioned above) just had the bulb replaced not too long ago. Didn't even make it a year. According to the guy who did the warranty work (I had to let him in the house, so I talked to him), they are having problems with the JVC sets as well, and the bulbs are blowing out at a rate of one every 6-12 months
!! He said as far as the rear projection sets go, Sammy has given them the least amount of trouble along with the Sony RP LCD 720p sets (the models below the SXRD sets).
So that combined with I'm not impressed by the performance of that set hasn't really put JVC on the list for me for their 1080p sets. Siggy keeps raving about them, so when the time comes I'll give them another look, but it will really need to wow me to have a shot...
