Comcast HD line is weak and expensive

This is my local Comcast HD lineup...

200 [Comcast Sportsnet HD]
202 ESPN HD
205 Discovery HD Theater
206 INHD
207 INHD2
215 & 300 HBO HDTV
219 & 319 Cinemax HDTV
223 & 339 Showtime HDTV
227 & 369 STARZ HDTV
231 WABC-DT [WPVI-DT] (ABC)
232 WNBC-DT [WCAU-DT] (NBC)
233 WCBS-DT [KYW-DT] (CBS)
234 WNYW-DT [WTXF-DT] (FOX Widescreen)
235 [WPHL-DT] (WB HD)
240 WNET-DT [WHYY-DT] (PBS-HD)

That seems kind of weak to me. Is this the norm?

They are quite the ripoff too. In order for me to get HD they require me to first upgrade to "digital cable" pay a fee for a box (I am currently on basic with no box), and then pay for these HDTV channels. Plus the HBO/Showtime/Cinemax/Starz require subs too.

So what it boils down to is they are offering my locals plus Discovery and ESPN.

You're in pretty much the exact same position I am here in the Chicago area. My cable bill would go from $48 per month to almost $80 in order to get the same programming I have now plus about 4 or 5 extra HD-only channels beyond that linup. Just not worth it to me at this point in time.

Well I did some research on this and it seems that Comcast actually sends the HD locals in the clear, and uncompressed, to all of its cable customers. If that's the case, I'm sure not paying all that extra money for a couple more HD channels. I'll just be happy with the locals until Comcast offers more HD channels.

If I had known this I would have bought a plasma that had a tuner, but it looks like I can rent a box for $10.25 a month. That's acceptable to me and I'll use their box until the Series 3 Tivos hit the street. I'll give Comcast a call on Monday.
