Lookie here:

Then tell me about those flux capacitors on the floor - and some of the wiring - I have NO idea what's going on there.

oh yeah I know about the vinyl vs digital, tube vs. solid state argument but I am curious about the wiring he is using and those mysterious boxes and wire rests he is using.

I've seen those wire resets before. I believe they are made of ceramic. Those other boxes on the floor are probably some kind of choke. The purpose of both is to keep noise out of the cable. Do they work? But they look mysterious and cost a pretty penny.

How much does that whole room cost technolgy wise. The record player is 75K, so I'd guess everything is greater than 1 million.

I have to ask any audiophiles here, is there really a huge difference between a 20K setup and a 2 Million dollar set up? I mean, 500 to 3k to 20K, alright, but after that is it just bragging rights, at least a little? I know on paper there are big difference, such as B&Ws diamond cone tweeters, but could an untrained ear pick up an instant difference?

Jeebus H Christo the cables or interconnects are like $10K dollars - talk about too much money.

I happened across a review of Transparent Audio's Reference XL line and the damn cable with the interconnects are $9800 per eight-foot pair.

http://www.soundstage.com/revequip/t...eferencexl.htm

This just sounds like a giant load of crap:

Where the Transparent Reference XL cables are composed, the Nordost Quattro-Fil interconnects ($1600 per meter pair) and SPM Reference speaker cables ($3350 per eight-foot pair) are light and energetic, especially from the treble into the midrange. The Transparent cables sound fuller, the Nordost more thin and stark by comparison. Down low, the Transparent cables were far superior in terms of bass weight and presence, but I can't say that the Nordost cables were deficient in either respect. It was more that the Reference XL cables portrayed low frequencies better than any others I've heard, the Nordost cables doing just fine on their own.
Yep and we thought only Superman could hear a gnat fart at 200 yards.

Does a $100K sound system really sound much better than a $10 -15K sound system?

Also, out of curiosity, I'm wondering how much a soundsystem for a theater would ordinarily cost.

Good home theater > movie theater

By good, it doesn't have to be pricey. All speakers at ear level, equally spaced (Left to right from center) sitting center, angled properly, and delays/distances calculated on a decent receiver.

Getting into these super high end systems, I don't think it is worth the money, but it does sound phenomenal. I have listen to some audio and movies where only two front speakers caused the room to disappear and the sound stage to have infinite depth in all directions. The imaging is amazing.

BTW if anyone has any specefic questions feel free to ask, I know Mike's system very well and the changes its gone through for the past 10 or so years.

A few quick notes, he is not a lonely guy with too much money, he is doing well and this is his hobby. He is in his mid-50's, has two grown kids and finally has the money and time to enjoy music and the quest of reproducing it, he still works full time(at a honda dealership actually) and is all around a decent guy. He is always willing to make time to help with questions and share his experiences, he is a staple in the audiophile community, writes for at least two audio magazines. He is a man doing what he enjoy's the most.
