Question Calling All TV / Electronic Guru's!

I'm buying a 50" TV for my new house in about a week and I'm looking to spend around $1,200-1,400 from Best Buy. And I can't decide on an LCD, plasma, or DLP. I have heard mixed things about ALL, and obviously want the best picture for the money.

What do you guys recommend?

Have you done your research other than this question? Read, read, read. Look at the ratings on electronics websites where users (purchasers) rate how pleased they are with the product, ask around (surely some of your friends have preferences). Usually you'll get the best response here if you sound like you know enough for us not to have to explain stuff to you.

There's a section under Home and Garden for Home Theater and Electronics and I know this has been discussed over and over.. It all depends on what all and where it will be used at..

If you do the research yourself, Best Buy isn't a bad place to purchase the TV, in fact, if you get a reward zone card (free to sign up) you can get some money back, saving you even more money. Do not rely on their customer service or sales staff, most of them are idiots and don't know much or will feed you BS like many other stores just to make a sale.

Actually, if you meander into the C&G forum, you'll also note that he's Bill Gates' personal console bish too.

How many robo's did you have to buy to get a free PS3?

Besides, I used $400 worth of gift cards and birthday money to get my elite. $65 out of pocket.

i just picked up a panasonic 50" plasma from sears for $1312 plus tax. it's the 75pxu model. the sale they are running right now is $1349, but that 's with $250 off if u sign up for their credit card. still, this price for this tv is a good deal.

if u are putting it in a place with sun and lamps u would want to get a coated plasma or an lcd tv. lcd's are generally more expensive. you'll get differing opinions on which is better in the plasma vs. lcd debate and there are pro's and con's of each, but you really gotta do the research so you can decide which is better for you.

When did you pick yours up? Was yours a desktop replacement?

Mine is going to replace my HP laptop and my desktop. I'm going to hook it up to my dell 30" display at home so that I don't have to have multiple computers anymore. That's the main advantage to this. And I can't wait to get Boot Camp setup. Probably gonna order mine next week. Just waiting for them to update the purchase to include leopard instead of Tiger.

Does your purchase qualify for the free leopard disc? (only need to pay shipping) Just thought I'd share...

Bought it like 3 months ago. And I have my MBP hooked up to my 24" Dell. It's sweet.. I love it.. I also have my desktop hooked up also and just flip a switch if I feel like using XP.. I did preorder Leopard. But from what I understand upgrades on a Mac are totally different then Windows. Macs are pretty much a upgrade rather then a total loss of everything and reformat with Microsoft.

You have to first post in the right forum. Secondly, you have to read the roughly 1,354,356,340 different threads asking which is best, plasma, lcd, or dlp. Honestly, there is about that many threads on the topic. Anywho, I will say this. You can't decide solely on a technology. For instance, Sharp LCD has an AWFUL picture. Panasonic plasma looks like sand running down your tv, just horrible. Now, Mitsubishi LCD is a nice sharp image, and Pioneer Plasma is to die for. So saying you want the best picture will encompass more then just a certain technology. Some of the other factors to look at include brand, specs, and of course price you are willing to spend.

Whatever you decide to purchase, make sure you completely understand the retailer's return policy. Sears, for example has very restrictive return policies on TVs, Costco just reduced their return time frame policy, BestBy/CC are pretty good about returns, etc...

Check out http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/

And spend a year or two researching what works for you.

I second the Mitsubishi recommendation, but no way your getting a 46244 for $1400.

as others said do some research
if the room is big, DLP is probably the best choice

BTW, with a $$ range of $12-1400, highly doubt u gonna get a 50" plasma or an LCD

cheapest i have seen is like $1800 for a 50" plasma at sams club
