I got an LG blu-ray player last year for $140.
It'll play CDs/DVDs/Blu-ray, has a USB hookup for portable hard drives, has wifi, will read most music and movie formats/file types and has numerous apps, including Pandora, Hulu, Netflix etc etc..
Not sure if that exact model is still around but here's a similar unit for $100

If you want to use the other functions of the PS3, I would suggest the console. It's a pretty good DVD/Blu-Ray player IMO.

I should mention I have a PS3. It's great but the LG player loads blu-rays faster.

I was looking at that Sony player because it has a Dual Core Processor, but that LG looks good, not worry about the wifi part. I got (on the way) LG TV that will do that.
But thought for a few dollars more, just get the PS3. I have an Xbox 360, but I don't use it a lot.

For the few bucks more, I'd go with the extra functionality. But, up to you...Xmas is here and budgets are budgets.

I have been thinking about that. But the console would be hooked up to my TV, him wanting to play the console, would take away from me watching the TV.

For most systems where client is not interested in a high end BDP, I go with LG. They work well, and IMHO, have the best GUI of any main brand player. I cannot stand Sony's GUI that they use pretty much across the board, including on the PS3. If you have any form of universal remote, you will have to add an IR adaptor in order to control the PS3 with your remote as well.

They are not exactly quick either... I have a PS3 slim (the original one) and compared to my old C2D 1.8GHz vostro 1400 laptop it's slightly slower.. My current Vostro 3450 leaves it in the dust when loading disks... it's noticably quicker and does not stutter on extremly high bitrate content like the PS3 does

I haven't had too many problems with the PS3. My only issue is I don't really like using the PS3 controller to navigate movies. Of course the Sony BD remote is only $20, but I don't like the idea of having yet another remote laying around. Maybe some day I'll look into getting a universal remote for everything.
IMO I'd say just get a dedicated Blu Ray player. iirc the best reason to get a PS3 a few years ago was because Blu Ray was still a new technology and dedicated Blu Ray players were just as expensive as a PS3.

PS3 is the best and easiest to upgrade and most future proof player.
I have mine working off my logitech harmony one remote, just had to had the logitech RF converter to the ps3.

I had thought about that as well, with thought about a PS4 maybe coming next year. I see Sony letting the PS3 sit idle with what was current.

PS2 stayed around for a LONG time after the Ps3. I believe it even got a redesign.
Either way...doesnt really matter. blu ray will not last as long as DVD did.
