400K Sony Bravia TV's Defective
The "good news" is it looks like it will only take a software update to fix them.

Over 400,000 Sony Bravia TVs Found To Be Defective
If you bought a Sony Bravia LCD or rear-projection screen TV within the past year, you may have a little bit of a problem on your hands. Roughly 400,000 of the TVs which were sold in North America, South America and Asia cannot be turned off or come of out standby mode once they pass 1,200 hours of use.
According to a Sony, users of affected Bravia models can go to its website where they will find instructions on how to have materials sent to them to update their TVs. Owners of Grand Wega models must use that same website to schedule a Sony authorized technician to come to their home to perform the update (all on Sony's dime of course).
Sony is providing the software update at no charge to owners of affected televisions through March 1, 2008. Terms of Sony's limited warranty otherwise continue to apply. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you and will continue to provide superior customer service for Sony televisions.

Big deal. They admitted they have problem and will pay to have a tech come and fix it.

They forgot about their customers, about what made them who they were.
Sony is crumbling like Rome. They're losing battles on all fronts, not because of the superiority of their enemies, but because of their own dumb mistakes.
It's sad to see, I spent my life being a Sony fanboy. They've let me down now... Sony is turning to shit.

<--- Has bought Sony stuff and has never had much luck with it. I've also been burned by Panny/Technics recently. Quality is going down.

I think this all started when the "Made in Japan" stickers changed to "Assembled in Mexico". When I heard that Panny plasmas were now coming out of Mexico it helped force my hand to NEC.

soopa is right. Sony really is, and honestly, always has been their own worst enemy.

IMO, overall quality from most of the major CE manufacturers is going into the shitter. I think most of the problem lies with the fact that people now expect prices to continously drop on everything. I don't think that was the case back in the mid 80's to mid 90's. From what I can recall, production caught up with demand and then the prices more or less leveled off. The price of a [WHATEVER] pretty much stayed the same year after year.
Now days it seems like everyone assumes that if [WHATEVER] has been avialable for two or three years, it should be considerably cheaper than when it was introduced. I would assume that kind of pressure has to force the manufacturers to cut a whole lot of corners which result in crappy quality.
