3D TV? Worth it?
OK, so I have decided I need to get a new TV for the house we're building. However, I want to go BIG, 60" and maybe even get a 70". 3D in 60" TVs is not a problem, but at 70", you pay a decent premium. Many people I know have 3D capable TVs and don't use it. I'm trying to figure out if it's worth getting it or saving the money for something else.
Does anyone use it? Worth it? I don't know if I'd use it. Having to put on the glasses, etc.

I have it, rarely use it. Porn/3D movies are great. Xbox sucks, regular TV is nice but can't watch it for too long.
65" LG or Samsung LED 3D Ready TVs, about $3K.. To go bigger you'd need Plasma. (Other companies have those retarded active glasses)
Great deals for a 55" LG LED + blue ray on ebay for $1200, or 47" on pc richards and son for $900.

Roughly 20% premium for 3D.

Don't do it! With the current tech, glasses free 3d is beginning to pop up in laptops where as a year ago it was only on portable game systems or phones. I expect it to reach larger TVs in a few years. Then anybody with 3d glasses on would look so silly.

Hard to beat for $1300, but a TV that size needs to be 240 hertz, just like it needs to be 1080p (which it is).
$3244.69

Sir, you are wrong. 3D content will provide the best viewing experience. But these TVs do convert 2D to 3D and makes it nice as well. I use it with FIOS (which has 3D channels), but when I watch plain 2D and make the TV convert to 3D it is actually a noticeable improvement. I just hate the glasses.

I have two friends who bought their TV's specifically because they were 3D. In the 6 mos to 1 year of ownership.. neither has watched anything in 3D.
Sharp has a 80" LED LCD. Picture looks fantastic.. very deep blacks. The one thing that I did notice and it could be from the source is that there's a little too much artifacting and noise in the picture.

I picked up a 7000 series 46" samsung 3d for my bedroom yesterday. I doubt i'll use the 3d much because it is in the bedroom and I don't really watch movies in bed too much. Nevertheless the tv picture is beautiful and I think aesthetically it's the best looking tv out there. I love the way the screen goes all the way to the edges.
On another note, I saw the 80" sharp at the store. RIDONCULOUS! My buddy got one about 2 weeks ago and I haven't had a chance to see it. When I saw it in the store I immediately thought what a wise man once said, "I gots to get me one of these!"
Once the wife and I figure out what we want to do about a new crib, i'll get one.

The huge downside is it's roughly twice the price of a 70" LCD.

My Dad is pushing me to get the 80". Damn peer pressure.
It's running about $1000 more than the 70" it seems.
I'm going to wait until we get moved in. By that time, maybe we'll see some more price concessions.

Are you going to be hanging the TV? I only ask because if you are looking to go that big, you could pick up an 83 Mitsubishi DLP for a lot less and still have the ability to go 3D.

I'm not a fan of DLP. Great technology.. don't get me wrong, but aside from the hassle of replacing bulbs.. it just doesn't look as good especially in a well lit room.
I did see the 82 Mitsu on sale for $1499 a few months back. I think you can get it for $1999 now. The 92 Mitsu is going for +4k.. expect to find deals as the LCD's start to become more competitive in size.
Regardless, still worth a look. Keep us updated.

Perhaps on some DLPs. The Mitsubishi has a great picture though and really the only manufacturer I use for DLP. Replacing the bulb is not an issue really, considering you basically get a new TV. If you buy a 80" LED, and it has an issue, its something you have to send it in for repair, or buy a new TV, depending on the issue. I don't do many DLP's though, and only recommend them in rooms large enough to warrant not having it hanging on the wall, typically only in situations where it will be inside a cabinet.

Those stupid refresh hrz rates only matter if you use those settings to watch sports...otherwise they make the image look like plastic soap operas...always have that shit turned OFF.
As for 3D...waste of money in my opinion. The implementation is horrible from most manufacturers/ disc transfers.
I haven't seen any of the newer LED displays over 60"...but if you're talking big..might as well projection at this point...it'll cost a bit more...but trust me, buy the proper screen...its so worth it.

I know YEARS ago, mitsu was one of the go to companies for large format pro CRT monitors...but after that, they fell off imo.

Maybe they have changed in recent years but a family friend got a 70" mitsu DLP a few years ago...I thought it was pile of crap...and they made it very limited in terms of what you could do to calibrate it.

I learn something today about Samsung 3D TV's. In 2D they are better than it's non 3D TV conterpart. I'll be buying a 3D Samsung, I may never use the 3D, but the 2D image with them is what sold me.
Still not sure what size or model, but the 55" 6400, is leading the way, maybe 47".

My buddy has the 40' XBR. We fucking moved it to his 3rd floor apartment, then 1 year later, to his house after it was built. 5 guys on each trip.. ridiculous. It's just so awkward to handle.. at least with the WEGA 36" it's long.. the XBR CRT is bulky. One guy was actually supporting it with his back as we moved up the stairs in his house. We almost crushed him..
