1080p difference?

Does anyone see a huge notable difference between the two 1080 formats? 1080i and 1080p? Do you guys see a urgency to upgrade soon if you have a tv that supports all but 1080p?

Saw some reasonably priced 1080p lcds the other day and i could tell a lick of difference between the different models, although the demo feed from the store was probably cast in the same format for all the tvs...

There is a very noticeable difference between the two only when watching a dvd in 1080p compared to i or playing ps3 in 1080p. I heard cable TV wont be 1080p ready for about another 2 years. You can go to places such as best buy or costco and see the difference side by side if you want. I bought a 46" sony bravia 1080i for now and when 1080p is broadcast in cable tv I will upgrade.

1080p probably wont be broadcast anytime soon. I'd keep the tv you have now unless your playing blu-ray's. There is absolutely no need to upgrade a 1080i tv to 1080p anytime soon. As ShowBiz says he'll get one when the start broadcasting it, sounds like a plan to me.

Most of the new DVD players (regular DVD players) will up convert the movie to 720p or 1080i. I personally don't see much difference at all between that and 1080p HD DVD's or BluRays. Watching it up close you will see slight better detail, but from regular viewing distance I think the vast majority won't see it.

Now if you have an old DVD player that does not up convert standard DVD's then you may see a good difference.

Got this from Wiki 1080p...

Ability of the eye to see 1080p
A person's ability to distinguish small details is described by visual acuity. When individual pixels are barely resolvable, increased resolution brings no benefit for the viewer, unless the viewing distance can be shortened. For many users television viewing distances, in order to see the full benefit from 1080p content a display must be bigger than usual or the viewing distance needs to be closer than usual. The ability of the eye to resolve 1080p content also depends on the amount of contrast in the picture. For optimum viewing of resolution it has been recommended that you sit back a maximum of approximately three times the height of your display.
Again the trick here is to make sure you have a DVD player that up converts to 1080i or 720p. If you have that chances are you won't see a difference playing 1080p HD DVD's or BluRays.

Oh and Mach30SiR is correct. You won't see 1080p broadcast anytime soon.

I'm planning on upgrading my 32" Sharp Aquos 1080i/720p unit for a 1080p unit of the same size around October.
The reason I'm going 1080p is that this TV is also the monitor for one of my PCs, and I plan on getting a new PC around that time as well. IMO, unless you've got a PC hooked up to it, I agree there's little reason to upgrade right now.

1080p is technically better, but like Tuetasesu said, you are going to have a tough time noticing it.

There is a major difference between an upconverted image and a native HD image.

There is LESS of a difference between HD at 1080i vs 1080p. To my eye I notice enough of a difference to make it worthwhile, but I also originally bought a 1080p television. Those who have 1080i, I would not recommend upgrading unless you really have the disposable income. Wait until there is more 1080p compatible material available.
