Wndrlst's Hippie Woodland Retreat (aka A Home Build Thread)

^Thanks, so do I.
I'm sure they skimp to cut costs, but they're so worth the extra money. Especially in a setting like the one we'll be living in. It was important to me to take advantage of that. We'll have tons of privacy on this property, so I'm happy to be able to bring the outdoors in!

The tub is deep, but pretty standard. Just a 60" oval. Very, very excited about it, though. My in-laws bought it for me. They are awesome.
And to me, the scenery is paramount, and the house is a bonus!
For now, no. Hilarious on this site, no? We plan to add a (probably detached garage) in the future, but it's not a big thing for us. I'd care more if I still had the Acura, but my Subie is something of a beater, and HLL drives a Wrangler that has been flooded more times than he can count. He's not so great at staying on top of the weather to throw the cover on before it storms.
There's nothing to judge there, deer-boy!
I'll send you more pics - I've already had to battle a couple of relatively minor QC issues...don't want any with the electric!
Thanks! It's fun to see the vision come together!

Lucky for them it looks like they still have time to repair it
Oh and where will your panel be located?

Although I'm surprised they let them use metal staples anymore. I think they've been outlawed in some places in favor of these:
Metal staples are fine though when used properly

The idea is that if you drive a metal staple in too far, it will tear the insulation and possibly work its way down to the copper in time and ground everything out. Then you're looking at an expensive repair ripping out drywall trying to find why your breaker keeps blowing.
However, if used correctly, this will never happen. A good worker will know they messed up and fix it, if they care that is.
I didn't mind using either, but the plastic ones suck for trying to staple 3 or more wires on top of each other, which is why most guys hate them. Plus I think they could fall out easier in time.

Yeah, it's lovely. As for the garage - not really. We typically (2009-10 excluded) have pretty mild winters around here. We'll be buying a plow attachment for HLL's Jeep to plow the driveway if needed. We'll have to do that in a big snow, garage or no.
It would definitely be nice to have, but isn't a priority for us right now.
Thanks!

The Trex is in! The only things left to do with the decks/porches are the railings and stairs. The stairs won't go in until the rest of the fill dirt is in. They'll push around what they have either today or early next week, and see what is still needed.
We're pricing out the steel cable railing system for the back to minimize view interruption.
Corbels are in, also. They took away our front porch columns, but they'll be back.

Obviously they still need to finish off the edge on this nearest deck.

Screened porch is about finished except for paint, fixtures and screens/doors

I really like how they carried the white trim up to the ceiling. Nice touch.

I really need to get out there with an actual camera soon. I keep forgetting to take one.
The builder said the trade inspections should happen in the next week or 2, then drywall goes up. He's thinking just over 2-1/2 months from now, so may actually be in by the end of September!

:P Caulk is extremely important.
HLL sent the builder a note yesterday asking him to get the guys to clean up the place. They've dumped wrappers, cigarettes, and all kinds of other trash everywhere except in the dumpster. We do NOT want them just to bury it. He said he already said something to them and they're on it. Grrrr..

I agree. I think it's very disrespectful. It's wrong anywhere, but doing that crap in the middle of these otherwise pristine woods, when we're clearly trying to disturb as little as possible, is extra annoying.

That does suck. The worst is when paper and other stuff blows away into the woods (or other people's property in most cases).
Is it stuff outside or inside or both?
My old employer had a guy hired to do nothing but clean up inside and out. No way to work with junk piled up all over, especially plumbing and electric.
#198
^Both outside and inside, but mostly outside. They make a mess inside, then clean it up..rinse and repeat. And I expect that. It was the non-construction-related trash outside that was pissing me off. The silt fence is keeping it from blowing all over the property (or I'd have made a much bigger stink about it much sooner), but it was starting to get really bad. I went out Saturday and they had done a pretty good job of cleaning it up. Dirt hadn't been moved yet, so it was nice to know for sure they didn't just bury it.
All in all, I've been very happy with our builder. We've hit a couple of snags here and there, but he's been responsive and on top of things. I took a friend out Saturday night who has extensive experience with building and remodeling (he owns a granite fabrication business) to check it all out before drywall goes up. He's one of those self-pronounced hyper-critical types, so I knew he wouldn't pull any punches. He couldn't say enough good things about the quality of construction and materials they've used. That was nice to hear!

If this hadn't been spread all over the site and steadily growing, I might worry I'd falsely accused! That's cute. Bet you're looking forward to no more dumpsters and contractors on your property.
