Takes a long time for hot water

Takes a long time to get hot water to most faucets. Is the most likely cause the water heater? any other simple checks I should perform?

How far away from the water heater are the fixtures? Do the closer ones get hotter faster?

How old is your water heater?

If it is electric it has two heater coils one may be out. Replacing a heater coil isn`t hard if in fact it is the problem. Just have to drain the water and replace the one that`s suspect. BTW turn off the power from the main before doing any work.

If it is gas, check the dial on the thermostat.

If none of that works for you it may be on it`s way out.
