my Aunt and Uncle live in a senior community and installed one with an electronic keypad backup... since their son is living overseas, he is able to remotely help with set up and stuff for them... they primarily use it in case they leave the house and forget to lock the doors, it will auto lock... or if they forget their keys, they can still get in with their phones or pressing in the code...
i could definitely see the uses for it... i just wish they were a little prettier... it's just too bulky for my taste...
Yeah I'm debating to get one of those fancy smart phone locks or just get one with a keypad like a Schlage Camelot or something. I live by myself and always fear I'll lock myself out so changing my deadbolt would be nice and hell I wouldn't need the key then but just was wondering of anyone else used one of these projects with success.
i can always get in through my garage (keypad) if i get locked out... so i never have to worry about this... but if i were you, they have gotten a lot cheaper now...
Though about it at the beach house but it would prevent us from declining use from our family and inlaws.
This is exactly where we use it. We have a few keypad locks. The main door is programmable by the management company... then we have some on the storage we lock so we don't have to carry a bunch of keys.
As for the family/inlaws... that's easy... we tell them the house is not available for use unless we are there. So far, so good

Some of the smart phone app locks, actually allow you to grant access and then pull it. My mom has people take care of her horses and while she has a number keypad to get it with guest codes she changes, this is looking like the new, easier to use winner.
It isn't clunky like the current number pad either

I think I found my future smart lock. Somewhat wish it had a physical key, but I guess it's not the end of the word because you can use a 9-volt in extreme cases the battery has died.
The fuck? No one has mentioned the August lock yet, this is the one I'd get. It installs on the inside so you still have can use a regular key on the outside if you need to
So some things have changed, more players in the market... August has a Gen 2 that seems more promising, Yale STILL has not released the Linus (probably due to Nest ) But Yale locks will be Homekit compatible come March...
Anyone using Smart locks yet?
I locked myself out this past Summer and it cost me a nice $125 for a lock smith... I had my phone though... ugh. Smart lock would have been nice.

My sister has the ATT Digital where you can use the key, app, or code. I imagine it's pricey though. You could always go analog and just hide a lockbox somewhere.
Anyone add a smart lock? I still haven't but I sure wish I had one. Had my luggage stolen a few weeks ago in cali and lost my house keys. Had to have a lock smith get into my place so I could access my spares.
For the record, there are two types of these locks that get confused often. The keypad lock is just an electronic lock in that you punch a PIN to get in and that's about it. You can do multiple PINs and grant/remove access as you wish but all valid PIN's work all the time.
A "smart lock" is one that interfaces with a controller (ie SmartThings, Iris, Wink, etc) that allows you to do MUCH more. For example, a simple command will perform all the things you want at night (door lock, alarm on, lights off, garage closed, temp set on tstat, etc). Additionally, you'll be able to tell the state of the lock from anywhere in the world and be able to alter that state as well. You can lock (but not unlock) via voice command. You can have specific PIN's for people that are only valid during certain times of the day and get records of who accessed the house and when. Unlocking the door can trigger a series of other commands like turning the lights on, alarm off, disable camera recording, and reset tstat temp. The list is literally endless of what you can do.
An electronic lock goes for ~$70-$100ish. A smart lock goes for $150+ so be sure you know what you want to do as there is a big price difference. For the record though, I have this one on my garage entry door:
I plan to put a Schlage on my front door when I get around to that later in the year so that it matches the regular knob.

I am using a Yale Real Living smart lock with lever, paired to a Samsung SmartThings hub, mainly for code usage tracking. The lock is nice, although I am thinking of having the locksmith/installer come back as I don't feel like it as secure to the door as I would like... Just a little "loose"...
I didn't knowYale made one... Thanks stogs!! I'm not a fan of Kwikset quality and Schlage is just under acceptable for me
Kwikset and Schlage locks get better reviews than many these days. They are all at a similar price point anyway so the quality is generally quite comparable.
