Skunks under my backyard shed

So seems a nice family of Skunks (Several Babies and momma) have taken residence under my shed.

Best way to get them the hell out of there??

I've read everything from Fox urine to Ammonia Soaked rags and Mothballs.

Anything else?

If it was just a skunk, I would flush it out with a hose. However, since there are babies, I would call an animal control person.

I have found live traps are the best way to catch kritters.

Use a full sized (CAT) metal trap bated with dog food. Make sure to place it in an area that will allow you to approach the animal with a large tarp. Once you have verified that there is a skunk in the trap, not the neighbors cat, cover the trap with the plastic tarp. Then place the entire set-up in an outdoor kiddy pool filled with water (or build a custom box lined with 6 mill plastic as I did) whatever it is must be tall enough cover the skunks head*. This is the most humane way of dealing with those nasty bastards. You'll still need to toss your clothes and take a shower afterwards, but it beats having the neighbors call the cops on you for gun fire next door.

*Leave the skunk in the water for a good 10 minutes, or until you see his shit floating, as they can hold their breath for a long time.

Ugh, drowning a live animal and slowly letting it choke on water is humane? Whats wrong with you?

Shooting it in the head is more humane than that.

When I had skunks under my porch, the animal control people suggested just leaving them
be for about 4 weeks. When the babies are big enough mama will lead them off to find homes of their own. And yep, that's what happened. After they left I sealed up the hole
they had used to get in. No negative karma points for doing something horrible to them.

Live traps are the way to get hem gone. prevention-I dug a trench a few inches deep and buried garden cloth attached to the frame board at the bottom of the shed. Basically it fences them out and I haven't had any issues for a fer years with bunnies or skunks

Yup, thats what we ended up doing. The babies already looked pretty big so we waited it out and its been a couple of days since we've seen them. Think they are gone.

I don't know how true this is (it worked for me) but apparently they don't spray into the wind. When we trapped a big ass one under our house last year, a family friend came over to pick it up for me. He grabbed an old piece of canvas out of the truck and showed me. Walked right up to the skunk in the trap (who was VERY pissed off) from upwind, covered, and tossed him in the truck.

I used peanut butter on bread with a piece of shrimp to lure him into the trap.

I also learned that you may want to put some wood under the trap as they will dig the shit out of the lawn while in the trap.
