Remote Thermostats
Remote Thermostats
Anyone use these? Anyone have any kind of experience with them or know which one is good? My stupid developer built our condos with the thermostat near the front door so its impossible to heat the condo properly. I googled a few but don't know which one would work well.
One of our friends has one in their new house and they love it. Their daughter's bedroom would be colder then the rest of the house (combination of high ceilings and thermostat position). They got a remote thermostat and put it in her room, and problem solved.
I'll email them to see what kind it is...

^ Sorry, but no luck. The HVAC company did it for them and they are not sure what brand it is. Apparently they had to try about 2 or 3 before they found one that would work.
Next time I'm at their house I will sneak a peek at it as I am sure that there has to be some identifying markings on it somewhere.

Usually it's best to have two temperature pickups... One at worst room in the house one at the best. Then a smart thermostat that will average the two.
Hands down Honeywell makes the best thermostats out there. There really isn't a better thermostat than the Vision Pro IAQ. It does more than most people will ever need...
I would try and balance out the duct work before changing out a thermostat...
Buying a wireless one station stat is just going to move the problem... If her room was cold before it's going to be VERY warm where ever the old stat was...
So I guess if there goal is to just simply keep the area nice where ever the stat is... they will achieve that. It's going to be costly on their heating/cooling bills though...
It took me almost 2 months to balance out this house adjusting the dampers, fixing leaks, and insulating duct work... It's not a simple task because you need to account for a lot of things... Solar thermal gain being one... was it very sunny the day you adjusted? If so you need to wait at least 24/hours between each adjustment to see how it plays out. And it's best to check measurements in the early morning after the house has sat through the cold all night...
I bought 8 or so ($2) digital thermometers and put one in each room... Then adjusted the main dampeners every 24 to 48 hours until I got it right... I sometimes had to wait longer if the weather got suddenly warm... If you ever do this start will all of the vents open...
Anyway, good luck to them...
Any of the wireless stats you find at home depot/lowes will work... there is no such thing as a "special thermostat" ... the only special types are those that run multiple stages of heat or multiple stages of cooling. If you don't know what kind of system you have you can easily figure it out looking at the wiring. Or lookup the model of thermostat you currently have and buy one that handles the same number of stages of heat/cool. If you don't understand the wiring you shouldn't be installing a thermostat...

Siggy,
I actually did everything I could to make adjustments. I can't really do anything about the duct work, its in my condo so I can't really tear up the ceiling. I closed most of the vents in the large areas to push air to the coldest place, however, since the thermostat is way on the other end, the rooms end up getting too hot and the furnace runs longer than it should. At this point wireless is the only solution.
