I had a small "cool mist" one and I didn't like it because it created a lot of dust. The large cool mist ones are okay because they have large internal filters/wicks.

If I needed a small one now I think I would look for a warm mist one.

For me, having good humidity in the house has helped keep me from getting sick as often as I used too. I currently have a whole house humidifier that is bolted onto my HVAC.

^^ thanks for the tip.

I haven't caught a cold in past year and half (knocking), but that dry throat is killing me.

I will keep that in mind, look for warm humidifier.

Bump. S14 you end up buying anything? I moved into a condo recently and the RH is 20% and my rhinitus has been flaring up like crazy even while on meds.

Take a really hot shower with the door open...

Or boil a pot of water until half of said pot has evaporated.

Humidifiers are a giant waste of money...need cleaning (that youll never do) and are just a big pain in the butt in general.

Hot showers are not adding enough, the RH in my condo was 19% this morning after my shower. I bought a honeywell unit after work and it was DOA. I'm pretty pissed about it.

Something like this works really well in a condo. I had something similar in my townhouse that was about 1300sq ft.
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...2&blockType=G2

I tried boiling water on the stove but it couldn't put up enough water daily. I had no idea how many gallons of water was required to make a decent amount of humidity in the house. Something like above you can set the level and let it run all day.

^BTW, I was really impressed with the filtering on the console one that I had. The little ones have horrible filters. I changed the filters and cleaned the inside of the unit once a year.

Would a little be fine for just one room? Like a 10x12 bedroom?

The one you posted only had 2 review, one good and one bad so it's hard to determine if I would buy that.

This other one that popped up on the side has better reviews and 395 of them. Granted it does do warm and doesn't oscilate...

The reason I purchased that one was because it does warm and cool, it takes normal water because it uses a demineralization disk (don't have to buy distilled water), oscillating nozzle and because it's anti-microbial. Also Homedics make good products.

It has 6 reviews, four good, 1 so-so and one bad.

I have one made by Vicks. Just grabbed it one day because I saw it at CVS. I keep it in my office at work because it is dry as hell in that building. It works very well.

True.

...but some of these peeps live in the land where they use heaters to warm their homes....and the heaters run 24/7......crazy.

...but yea, it will tend to dry things up a bit.

when It's -5c outside it zaps all the humidity out of the air. I exchanged the one I bought for a new one and the unit is humming along.

this is the one I got.

Steam is the way to go. Started with multiple vaporizers from the pharmacy. Moved up to whole house steam on the furnace. Once a year I change the water filter and scrub off the coil. Works great, the only downside is huge electrical usage, making steam from electricity is not cheap.

Warm air heat without humidity is a problem, next house will have hydronic radiant heat via 98% efficient gas boiler Have a friend with this setup in a new high efficiency house, he does not need to make up any humidity, exhaust fans actually go on automatically when he gets too humid.

Furnaces are most of the problem, drafts are the rest...

Yes, that's the reason I first bought a small one. You may need to keep your door closed so that house doesn't suck the humidity out of your room. Start it an hour or two before you go to bed.

Thanks for the tips!

I ended up getting cheap ass one, not some $400+. I am pretty happy with the result.

should be plenty enough to cover your room.

This is why I started looking into this. I have pretty sensitive sinuses and I recently moved which caused them to go crazy, basically feels like your about to get sick all the time.

I got one that's supposed to be good for up to 1500 sqft, I live in an 800 sqft condo and it can't keep up for the whole place. I'm now able to keep the place at about 35%RH which is a big improvement since I was sitting at 16% to start. During the day I leave it in the common area to try and bring up the RH in the entire unit and shortly before bed I put it back in my room. I've noticed that when I wake up I feel markedly better, my sinuses aren't sore nearly as much. I've actually noticed that towards the end of the day at my office my sinuses begin to be sore again and I figure it's likely due to humidity as well since we just moved into a new building. I should take my hygrometer in and see what the RH is sitting at there.

Interesting if it supposed to cover up to 1500 sqft but can't get the job done? Do you have the heater running all the time? hmmmm.

Glad to hear that it did improve though....

btw, where did you get the hygrometer? I am curious to know how bad my room is w.o running my humidifier.

I think part of the reason why it can't keep up is I have floor to ceiling windows on 1 entire side of the condo, which also have 2 sliding patio doors. I think there's a lot of air loss there which let's the dry cold in. My brothers room is quite drafty so I think the builders screwed up the weather sealing, sort of sad for a 3 year old building. Right now I have Hunter Douglas vertical blinds which I'm thinking of switching to Black out curtains which supposedly make a decent difference in preventing the glass from cold soaking the room.

I bought this one off amazon.com

http://www.amazon.com/Chaney-Indoor-...4864512&sr=8-1

Runs on 1 AA battery, reviewers mentioned that they've had this unit for over a year and never replaced it.

I might have to get exact one.

I been getting dry bloody nose lately. I am originally from Seattle where air is cleaner and not as dry than here in LA.

I might have to give up my ghetto humidifier to my gf and get a little bigger because it's not doing the trick. It sure did improved little bit, still not enough to make a huge impact.

We bought this one - we really like it. Pricey, but so far very worth it.
