A search will yield you tons of discussions and opinions re: cookware (although your budget might change things a little).

Search for any of my posts in those threads. Im pretty sure Im the resident cheap-ass.

$75 sounds like a reasonable amount to get a set with.

I still like my Faberware set, but cooking is a chore for me, not a hobby...

I got my set on sale 4 or so years ago for under $75... probably under $100...

If I had to buy today, The wolfgang puck ones would be on my list too...

Don't be a cheapo with your cookware. You don't really need an entire set. One non-stick pot and one non-stick pan should get you started. The heaver the better.

SS (which I prefer)

Well, theyre holding up nicely in the box I got them in Ill break them out this weekend.

Ive used even cheaper ones from TJMaxx and Marshalls and never have a problem with uneven heating or any of the problems associated with cheaper cookware. So Im assuming these are going to hold up better.

Just depends on your preference...you can get decent shots without a Canon and a decent vacuum without buying a Dyson....know what I mean?

Macy's brand Tools of the Trade are very good. My Mom cooks a lot and has been using them for years.

As mentioned, get 1 good non-stick 10" fry pan, 1 stock pot, and one small saucepan and you'll be set. The stock pot and sauce pan do not need to be non-stick.

I'm an All-Clad fan myself (Master Chef) but they're out of your price range.

If you're only going to spend $75 for an entire set, I don't think it matters what you get - it will all be the same more or less. That's like saying I want to get a decent car for under $400, anyone got a suggestion? Point being, at that price you're going to get what you pay for no matter who made it. I'd try to avoid aluminum stuff though.

edit: and on the All Clad - 10 years and not a single problem. But a single small pot will cost you $75 with them. Just go to Wal Mart and get whatever you want. That stuff got most of us through college.

do not waste your money - save some more. 75 will not buy you crap and what it does buy you will be warped and no good in 6 months. Plan on a 200 at least. If you buy them right, you will only need to buy them once. I think we spent 3-4 hundred - I do not recall. Analon professional was the name - been pretty good. May upgrade though next time - we like to cook and you do not want a crap pan or pot. Sorry, 75 dollars is not worth the trip to the store. IMO.
