new home

I currently live in a small home (about 2500sq.ft). been living this house since 2003. The wifey and I decided to buy our dream home (........she decided she wants a dream home) so we bought our first enormous home in Glen Mills PA earlier this month. It's brand new construction, the house got done back in April... it's about 4700 sq.ft. I currently don't have any photos but this is what it looks like

rather than brick red, it's concrete white.

The wifey already spent thousands trying to furnish the whole place... I mean... over 50k worth.... and it filled probably 1/4 of the place... not including any plasma TVs... mostly furnitures and paintings...... and when she buys stuff...she buys the best......

Life is extremely busy since we bought the house... well.. my life's been very busy......(work, heads straight to new house and...work some more) while she spent most of her life at the hospital. We put down a good 45% on the house and still owes over 450k.....
our cat is going to get so lost in there once we fully move it... and we're going to need to hire a maid since the wifey is hardly home... if she is, she's either sleeping or relaxing....

I haven't really been on this side of the forum but will be looking forward to helpful tips, advice from some of the home improvement guys
so thanks in advance, I'll take some pictures within the next few weeks....

Jack

But then again, spending 50k to furnish my home isn't really an option for her right now either...
...and neither is hiring a maid...EVER.

Understatment of the century right there!!

We moved into our brand new home on 3/31/05 and we're still not done doing things to it. And I won't even mention how much we've spent on it so far total. Worst part is that the house is maybe 65% properly furnished. It gets expensive setting up a house this big....

Anyway, nice house Jack! And based on what you put down and what you owe, I'm even happier we moved to NC

a home is a great investment, so I'm not really against spending money on a house or furnishing a house. Perhaps I'm not that against it since she fullfilled her dream of a nice home... down the road... I get to say "honey, now I want my zo6 vette"

It's also easier on me since she spent most of the money on the house instead of me..... after all, her income is more than twice mine....

God...if 2500 sq ft is small....I'd hate to know what my 1000 sq ft dump is...a step above a carboard box in an underpass!

4700 sq ft is alot to clean....

Congrats on the new purchase...hopefully I'll own a house one day.....before I die!

I'm hoping we can afford a house that's under 2000 sq ft.

Depending on how many people live in his house, it's not that bad to clean.

In ours, it's just me and the wife. I run the Roomba once a week downstairs since it's all hardwood, and upstairs, we only really use the den since that is where my office is... so only need to vacuum in there once in a while. Furniture doesn't really get dusty, so the biggest upkeep is the kitchen. Plus, 4 times a year we hire a cleaning service to do a deep cleaning, and we just maintain in between..

Oh, and one other thing I forgot to comment on... our first home was 2600 square feet, and while it was not as large as our home now... I definitely would not consider it small by any means...

Damn, 2500sqft is small? Our place being built is 22-2400 sqft and I thought it was big enough for our family (3 kids). I must not have high enough standards! That pic you provided reminded me of a prep school or something!

TypeS, 3 kids here in a 2500ish square foot house. It is tight, but you'll get over it(my dad hasn't hung himself yet and hes been under a lot of stress, so I say were doing well).

AcuraDriver 2006, that is one VERY nice house. If that is your real age, congratulations and kudos more so. I hope I have a place like that I 28, though I'm thinking it'll more likely be 82, depending on inheritance(though I marry a model as planned that should bring in some money).

50K isn't too bad for furnishing. That stuff easily gets expensive, much more than that. A good table can be thousands, if not 10s of thousands(if you live that rich), and nice leather also can cost a pretty penny.

Get a roomba and scuba and have the maid come once a month or something like that. We have weekly cleaning ladies, but that is because their are 3 kids and a dog.

Congrats again, and get us some real pics.

Mike

^ thank you... I am 28
50k really isn't much, we spent a good 11k on couches alone.... we've been investing heavily because Christmas is right around the corner... this is our hear to host the family party.

Can I ask what the point of a 7000+ sq ft home is? I'm sure it's beautiful and all, but unless you have 15 kids all needing their own bedrooms, plus staff quarters, I just can't see why you would even want a house that big.

BTW, feel free to post pics. I want to see which room I could fit my future house into

If you can afford it... why not? The house we were going to build was ~7600 sq ft and it's just my wife and I right now. The two main living areas would be setup the same way our house is setup now, and the basement was going to be converted into several rooms/areas... 2 guest rooms with their own full baths, a half-bath, a dedicated home theater room, a wetbar area with kitchenette, a game room area by the wetbar with a pool table and some other games, and an excersise area. We decided against the house for now, but that will be about the size of the next place when we do decide to build again.

You don't need a ton of kids or any staff to want a house that large or to be able to use each room in a house that large...

7600 is ridiculous big.... I thought mine was way too big.........
When we were building this house.... we decided to make every room a master bedroom (each room has its own bathroom)... including a bathroom on each floor... total of 6 fullbath and 4 half bath.....

its fucking insane....... but its the wifey's dream to have this kinda home.... seems like she is going to live until she dies here.............
but that's one step closer to my zo6 (can't get it now...I promised no sports car when I sold my Cobra for a TL not too long ago)

^ You say that now... but just wait. Our home is 4500 square feet and after only 18 or so months, it already feels small and we still have rooms we don't use! Just watch. You'll start filling it up with furniture, etc., you'll get accustomed to it, and it will feel small.

Oh, and we also said this would be our forever house which is why we went so big and loaded it up, etc... but we're already getting the itch, and almost built another house a month or so ago, but decided against it for now. So be careful when you say that... b/c forever may only end up being 24 months or so

I'm sure you already know this, replace your old bulbs with those compact fluorescent ones. They use around 2/3 less energy and they last a helluva lot longer. I personally don't like the look of them because they're ugly, so we didn't go all out. But on our can lighting that has translucent plastic covering it (if that makes sense), it worked like a charm. Also shut off a couple of your water heaters and furnaces (mainly hot water heaters). You'd be surprised at how much it saves.

any doctor gets paid well......... it's a prestigious profession. A profession that requires dedication and alot of time away from home.
Doctors barely have time for anything besides working in the hospital... unless you have your own practice, your own schedule, it's pretty much..... spending 24-7 there.

Starting salary for an immunologist is least 145k...also depends on which hospital you work at, which community, and also based on what college you graduated from.

but as a doctor, you have to buy a ton of malpractice insurance, liability insurance and etc., you really don't start making money after least 5~8 years into your profession. There are those who have a ton of debt coming out of medical school... you also have to take that into consideration. Luckily for the wife, her dad covered everything that school hadn't already from scholarship.

Wow, that's crazy. Our gas and electric bill here averages about $300/mo, and that is with a pool which adds about $100/mo to the electric charges...

$975 is crazy. Get some programmable thermostats quick!! Also, it took us a year in the house to get the hang of it. Our first summer and winter our bills were high too... but once we figured out the tricks with the airflow in the house we got the thermostats programmed to compliment each other... and things are much better.
