Process? Material used?

Mine has a "do it yourself" epoxy floor, but the previous homeowner did not adequately prep the concrete prior to applying the epoxy - thus, another summer task on my list.

In the before pics, is that floor properly prepared? Mine looks about like that and I'm afraid to put the epoxy on it because I've read that it needs to be perfect.

BTW, looks great.

Swept the floor.
Used a blower for step 2.
Rinsed the floor with a hose.
Let dry. Rolled on Behr clear epoxy primer. Used .80 gallons.
Waited overnight.
Rolled on Behr epoxy paint with 3/8 inch nap roller.
Waited 24 hours.
Rolled on second and final epoxy coat.
Waited about 60 hours to park the cars in the garage.

I just prepped the floor like it said in the directions. The primer really helps the epoxy stick to the floor. I wish my floor was smoother and more uniform, but you can't have everything. This weekend I plan on adding another double-wide cabinet next to the other two in the pics.

Looks nice. I'm assuming the stuff you pulled down won't be impacted by hot tires?

I hope not!

I am parking the cars in the garage a little sooner than the label says, but I haven't driven my car at all in about three days, so no hot tires on my car!

If I ever own a house, and the required 3 car garage, one space with a high capacity lift, I'd probably put this stuff down: http://www.garagefloor.com/garage-fl...opsandpits.htm

Or some variation of it. Anybody have that?

Your garage floor looks nice BTW.

It's not even that... Regular driving heats up the tires. So over time and if the paint hasn't properly bonded to the concrete, the tires will pull the paint up. You'll notice it over time.

If you own a house worthy of a 3-car garage, you'll want a 4-car... trust me.

Especially if you want a lift.

At least 2-slots get filled up by cars (truck gets parked in the driveway), then the other spot is needed for storage/workshop/light-vehicle usage (tractor, atv, motorcycle, whatever).

A 3-car garage is just too small. Mine is filled to the brim.

Garage looks great gatr. I am going to paint mine in the spring... can't decide between tan or gray though.

Props on not using the "speckles". They look awful.

Surprised you didn't have to acid etch the floor. Hopefully it doesn't pull from hot tires.

I would have. Or at a bare minimum used a 3000+psi pressure washer and hit it with some cement cleaner. Oil/grime stains need to be taken out... no primer will save you there.

Is it a brand new house? Did you do the moisture test? You tape a piece of saran wrap down on the floor with duct tape and let it sit for a day. If there is moisture under the saran, the floor won't bond properly.

Thanks! That means a lot coming from you!

Honestly, the only reason why I didn't use sparkles is because the paint didn't come with them. Just plain grey for me.

I wish I would have used a tan color to semi-match the walls, but I kind of like the contrast now.

Behr said I didn't need to. Just sweep, blow-dry, wet, squeegee, dry, prime and paint!

To the OP, how is your floor holding up? I have been reading a lot about epoxy floors and so far many people are having problems with the floor peeling or lifting.

I have narrowed my choices down to these:

http://www.armorcladepoxy.com/
http://epoxy-coat.com/

I don't know if it's the paint or what, but because of the hot tires here in Florida, the paint started to come up where the tires are about four weeks ago. Wife is out of town for the next four days, so I might paint the floor where the hot tires used to be while she is gone.

I would avoid Behr garage floor paint.

That's pretty much what I've heard from everybody that has used their product. I have a brand new house with unsealed concrete so hopefully I won't have any problems.

I used that epoxy stuff 3 yrs ago on my garage. For the most part its held up well, but there are a few spots where it peeled. I did my basement floor with a regular concrete paint and that is flawless. I will be doing my garage with that stuff soon, and for 20 bucks a can its cheap too.

Which epoxy? They all vary widely as far as water content etc. Did you put a top coat on it?

I ordered the kit from armorclad today. It was $700 shipped, enough for 1000 sq ft. It will be a month or so until I can put it on, but I will post pics and experiences at that time.

Any updates on the garage floor coating? How's it holding up? I don't know if I want to get my garage floors painted or coated with an epoxy. Also, since the concrete is new, I don't yet know if it's fully cured and if they layed down a vapor barrier which can pose a problem with the concrete and epoxy. So just thought I'd look into every option.

My floor has had a few problems with lifting and peeling issues. The floor was in a brand new house with unsealed concrete. I think one issue was that there was no vapor barrier placed under the concrete so water under the concrete is trying to make its way through to the surface and that is causing the lifting. There are a few places under the tires that have lifted too. I was given some touch up epoxy for free under warranty so I scraped the loose stuff up, sanded it and reapplied the epoxy. Within 6-9 months it lifted again in the same area.

I can post pics if you like.

Yeah typically you need to wait a while for new concrete to fully cure before finishing the surface.

I did mine in my old place. Decided to prep the floor with muriatic acid to really give it teeth for the coating to stick to. Nasty stuff but it really roughs up the concrete.

Home Depot carries it. Some say to dilute it but I used it full strength.

Wear a good respirator, long pants and shirt, face shield
Have a box fan sucking the fumes out of the garage
You need a short hair stiff bristle brush to scrub the acid into the concrete
Hose to wash the acid out of the garage.
I've read where people throw down baking soda to neutralize the acid but it seems like a mess.
Be careful getting it on any metal surfaces, it's nasty stuff

You'll know you did it right it the concrete has a rough feel to it when you're done.
