need a good edger for the springtime
 

i know spring is a few months away and winter is a day or so away, but.....
we have about 150 ft of sidewalk to edge.

the grass is currently overgrown over the cement by 2-4 inches.
i was on one of the lanscapers forums and found a little info that would help me.
but i need a less professional unit that will do a sweet job.

i guess i am expecting to spend about $200 or so. but that is a ballpark figure.

lowe's has a husquvarna for $200, is that a good starting point or are there better choices?

The Stihl Combi is awesome. I use it for trimming and change the ends for the edging duties. About 350 all in with both ends

now what if i have a trimmer?
i have a craftsman 4 cycle that is not a straight edge.

i wasnt sure if i could get an edger that does not operate as a trimmer

Get a gas trimmer.... I have a Toro. Works fine for me.

Rich, does your craftman wacker have the "quick tatch" or "expand it" options like most of the ryobi/toro/homelite/deere ??

On some of these deals, you can just change the head... I've borrowed my step dad's tiller attachment a couple of times to use on my trimmer...

I had the same issues as you did with your first weed eater and I took mine back and got a walk behind push edger. I love it and would rather have it than a weed eater. I actually need a weed eater to cut next to the fence, house, etc. but for right now, I just edge the sidewalk and driveway.

If you already have a weed eater I'd suggest a walk behind gas edger. They are four cycle, and very easy to use. If you have grass next to your curb, and if you can afford it, go with the one with three adjustable wheels so you can edge next to the curb. If you have sidewalk next to your curb, don't worry about it, get the cheaper non adjustable version.

You paid enough and bought your weed eater recently enough, that it should accept attachments. If so you can probably forget my post and just get the attachment. If not definitely look into the walk behind gas edger!

My Toro is having issues... Any recommendations???

I have the cheap ($70) black & decker plugin model (marked "2hp" but there's no way it's an honest 2hp) to edge against my concrete walks and driveway. As long as I keep after it regularly, it is more than up to the task.

It's worked for me now for 10 years.

I've got a gas powered edger.. does a nice clean job! I think its yard machines or somethin.. works good

I'm starting my 3rd season with an Echo SRM-210. It's friggen awesome. The only minor negative is it takes the engine about a minute to warm up before it is ready to go.

The issue is my toro would take the Expand-It attachments. The above doesn't allow for that. And most of the high end units don't.

What's the problem with the Toro?

It's somehow leaking gas. I haven't looked at it close enough, but every morning my my way to work I see gas and oil on the garage floor.

To be honest, I haven't looked at it close enough, but it's not worth messing with. Taking it in for repair is going to be $100, I'd figure.

Something like that may be fun to try to fix yourself. Worst case is you make it worse and you go buy the replacement you were planning on anyway.

I don't like using the weed whacker as an edger; I like having an actual edger because the results are consistant.. if you get distracted with a weed whacker you might take out part of the lawn.

If you don't have a lot to do and just need an edger. Manual edgers are pretty cheap.

Picked up a Craftsman 4-cycle... It can use attachments, so I don't have to reinvest in an edger and blower. Got a good deal on it too...

we bought one like this except it is from sears.
works well and leaves a nice straight line. the blade does scrape against the sidewalk and wears down the blade. The replacement blades are a few bucks to replace :thumbsup:
