Thanks guys. Yes we are keeping the old cabinets. We've filled the holes with wood filler and sanded down all the cabinets. They will be painted, along with the new doors.

Don't be so sure you can't do it. Up until I redid my laundry room, I never remodeled anything. Just painted some, installed a thing or two here or there. This project is the largest I have taken on, and pretty much all the finish work I am doing I learned by watching videos on Youtube or other how to sites.

Thanks again guys. Sorry for the lack of updates. Its been moving slow with everything that has been going on lately. My grandfather is in the hospital (he is 99), and my sister is at the same hospital after giving birth to her second child. We did get some stuff done over the weekend however. Basically just got sheetrock up.

Before sheetrock though, I had to get my conduit in for cooling for the TV and get the wires in:

Then came the sheetrock:

Have to get this last piece on. I had dinner plans the day we did this and had to call it a day just short of finishing:

We also rehung the cabinet we lengthened to fill the gap created by moving the cabinets to fit the newer fridge:

Fits nice and snug:

And figured I'd show the sample of granite that my mother chose. The countertops are already made and waiting for us to finish up enough for it to be installed:

Thats it for now.

Finally getting around to posting another update. Its been taking a lot to get things done. We've sanded down the new doors, getting them ready for paint. We've taken the drawer fronts off the drawers. I still have to make some new fronts but that should be relatively easy compared to the doors. We have patched all the holes, built the box around the microwave duct, and taped and compounded the walls. Here are some pics:

Removed the old cable outlet that will no longer be needed and patched the hole:

My brother cut out a rather large hole to patch the hole from the old hanging light:

TV wall patched. My dog looking in approval with her e-collar on:

I surprised my parents with something else. I got a Speakercraft MZC system with a Mode keypad, which is a LCD based keypad with full metadata that will display what is on their iPod when docked. It will also have the cable connected, possibly CD and AM/FM as well:

Keypad location:

Jamo 6.5" ceiling speakers:

A couple crappy iPhone pics. I forgot to take pics with my camera before I took the keypad out so it doesn't get dusty:

That's it for this update. Unfortunately, my grandfather passed away this morning at the age of 99, 3 months shy of his 100th bday. We will be dealing with some family stuff and sitting shiva for the next week, so it will probably be a little while before the next update again.

Wow that looks freakin awesome! You guys are doing an awesome job! My parents need to update their kitchen, want to come over?

Sorry to hear about your grandfather. My great grandmother passed a few years ago at 105. It's terrible to lose a family member but it's a blessing that they were around for that long.

Sorry to hear about your grandfather. My grand parents are getting up there in age and I worry about them all the time as I do not get the chance to see them enough.

The remodel looks amazing you are extremely talented. How does the cooling tube for the TV work. Will you use fans or is it just a vent port to allow air flow?

Need more details... Considering building a new home and would be doing some in-ceiling speakers, etc. Cost? Other details?

Thank you. I would love to come over and just sit on your couch and relax . Thank you also. My grandfather lived a long life, the last 38 years without his beloved wife. He never remarried or dated. He never complained or had a bad thing to say about anyone. He was just a sweet, sincere GREAT man.

Thank you. I worried just about every day about him.

I ran a 2 inch conduit down into the utility room below. I will install a standard pc style fan on that end pulling the air down and out. It will probably just be a standard AC or DC fan plugged into the cable box, and I will set the cable box plug to turn on and off with the box. I am putting in a Universal Remote MX450 that will control the tv and cable box so it will automatically turn the box on and off with the tv.

Thanks. The system is a standard distributing audio system. It is typically a Custom Installation product only, but its started to pop up online. I am not sure if Speakercraft will support it or not purchased online, so you might have to check before purchasing anything if you wanted it. You could always PM if you wanted me to get you one. It will consist of the main amp (either a 4, 6, or 8 zone system). The MSRP on the 4 zone is about $1500 with the 6 zone being in the $1900 range. The 8 zone jumps up considerably to over $4000 and has 2 built in AM/FM tuners. You will need to purchase a iPod base which is actually two pieces, called a Mode Base and Mode Adaptor. The adaptor plugs into the amp with a standard Ethernet cable, as well as a analog audio feed. From the Adaptor, you run another standard ethernet cable to the Mode Base where you dock your iPod. This setup runs another couple hundred. The keypads, called Mode 3.1, is the LCD based keypad that will display full metadata from the iPod, and can be programmed to display favorite channels/stations and/or control channel changing by entering the separate numbers (i.e. 1-7-5-Select to tune to channel 175). These keypads retail for $500. There is also a wireless keypad that can control all zones called the Mode Free (the Mode 3.1 controls only the zone it is installed in). I have the same system in my house, only I installed a two piece kit that allows me to use my iPhone to control the whole system, including the metadata info from the ipod. You can use a iPod Touch, iPad, PC, or Mac to control the system with this kit installed. I know an Android based phone or tablet can access the software, but have not yet tested all the features to see if it works 100%. It is sold as an iPod/iPhone/iPad control device. It runs about $500 as well. If anyone seriously wants to look into one, PM me and I can work on some better numbers but I cannot list anything online.

I forgot to mention that all three systems (4, 6, or 8 zones) can have 6 sources hooked up. The 8 zone has the 2 built in tuners so it actually has a total of 8 sources. If you wanted to install a system with 8 zones, but did not need the built in tuners or wanted to save a little money, you can purchase two of the 4 zone systems. They will connect together as a master/slave unit and share all the programming and sources. You can only couple the same units together, so you can only couple 4 zone systems together, or 6 zone systems together, or 8 zone systems together. And you may only run one master and 3 slaves for a total of up to 16 zones (MZC64 4 zone amp), 24 (MZC66 6 zone amp), or 32 (MZC88 8 zone amp). Obviously, the systems need to be programmed, requiring a programming cable, the software, and some knowledge of the software. It is a very easy system to program however. If you have more questions, feel free to ask.

I love the universal remotes they are really well made. I like them a lot better than the Logitech models. We have the MX-850 but for our home theater system but I wish we had one with a color display instead.

Sorry, been super busy. As soon as we got everything apart, business really started to pick up for me. I ended up hiring a guy to do a bunch of the work. He taped the sheetrock, installed the tile, and painted the walls and cabinets. I wanted to try to get everything done myself (minus the taping), but I just could not find the time. I do have pictures of some of the progress I will post, but unfortunately not as detailed as what I was doing before. Man, I feel like I let you guys down. I will post the pics a little later on today

The small cabinet next to the fridge with the new granite. This piece has a 3" granite backsplash, while the rest will have a yet to be determined backsplash:

Installed the TV last night:

Nice and tucked in:

Unlike the old tube TV they had in there, you get a great viewing angle from everywhere, especially the cooking area. Couldn't see the old TV at all when cooking:

It really is pretty flush to the wall. I am still considering building a frame around the TV. I am leaving up to them if they would like it or not. You can also see that the oven is now back in place as well. The kitchen is fully functional again:

I also programmed the universal remote to control the Speakercraft system, so they can control the TV volume or the Speakercraft volume from the remote through RF. Unfortunately I could not get the MX450 to learn the Speakercraft codes, so I left them with the spare MX900 I brought with me which is PC programmable and was working fine. I exported the Hex codes from the Speakercraft software, and imported them into the URC software, updated the MX900, and then tried to learn those codes to the MX450. Like I said, it wasn't working. The MX450 is a pretty remote with nice color screen, but I would rather leave them with something 100% functional.

I also had to have the room repainted because no one put up a test patch (even though I left a sample can). They went to a different store and bought a different brand that was supposed to be matched to the chosen color. Well it looked like Silly Puddy when I went to check things out. Luckily the place took back all the paint that was left and gave a full refund since they didn't match it. This is what it looked like:

It's probably hard to tell in the picture. It was very noticeable when I walked in the room.

You didn't let anyone down life gets busy it happens. Glad business is picking up for you in a economy like this. The kitchen looks great regardless of who did the work like gatr said.

Can't wait to see the final product but your parents are going to have one awesome kitchen that is for sure. I personally say do the wood frame on the TV and add a card reader to it so it can be used as a digital picture frame as well.

Beautiful!!
In fact, I even love the look of the upper cabinets sans doors....I think it'd look great with glass-panel doors.

Very nice, it doesn't even look like the same room. Did you put down a "hardibacker" type material over the floor before you tiled?? How is the transition from one room to another?
