is my dishwasher bad???

our dishwasher is about 10 years old. i rinse off all dishes before i load them into it. I have tried different detergents w/o much success. We do have hard water and no softener. We aren't going to add one at this place b/c of the cost and how long we are going to stay.

The glasses always have water marks and the dishes always seem to have a film.

the tops of the glasses sometimes have detergent dust on top.

all holes on the thing that spin are free of debri.

Is 10 years about the life of a dishwasher or is there some super cleaner that i can use to get rid of the spots and such?

Two things that I've found that works:

1. Use a liquid instead of crystals. Crystal-based dish detergents can cake and clog places you'd never see inside your dishwasher.

2. Use Finish, formerly called Jet Dry. The stuff really works

You might also want to pull the spinner off and check underneath. Most dishwashers have a "dipsoal" type mechanism that can get clogged. Mine was 2 years old and I was getting the same thing, because not enough water was getting in and recycled through to clean the dishes and soap and then drain out.

Get some dishwasher cleaner, can find it with the detergent. Should help clean residue left over years of use.

For water spots get some liquid rinse aid, there's a separate compartment for it, you unscrew it.

i checked the spinner thing and it looks fine underneath.

Once i am out of the crystals i will switch to the liquid and actually start using the jet dry that we have.

thanks for the info and i will try these out.

i was hoping the dishwasher wasn't taking a crap.

You may still want to think about replacing your dishwasher unless it was a fairly high-end unit. They've gotten substantially more energy efficient, effective, and quieter over the years and ten years is about the average life expectancy.

If you do buy a new one, don't cheap out. I had to buy a new one about two/three years ago. It's makes so much noise, I can't wait until it dies, but I have to wait at least three more years for the warranty to expire.

Spend a little money for one's that have better sound proofing.

Toss a bottle of Lime-A-Way in and run thru a pots & pans cycle. Then put in a gallon of white vinegar and run thru another pots and pan cycle. It works wonders on old dish washers.

When my old dishwasher was crapping out I just turned up the hot water a little to help clean everything. Got another few months of decent cleans out of it before it died.

I agree on the high end ones if you are going to replace. They make absolutely no noise, clean very well, and use much less water and energy.

same issues here dallison, wouldn't doubt most of it is from our horrible water. I have found a product called Lemishine that does wonders. Run in through an empty run and then add some to each wash. Also Cascade complete seems to be the best ive found and rated best by consumer reports
