I'd add outlets. Even if you rearrange the garage, something tells me youll end up adding more outlets in the future anyway.

Add the outlets...it'll be better in the long run. I can't believe they only had one outlet in the garage. That's just poor planning.

It baffled me too.

There are outlets all over the place in this house. I have 5 in 3 of the bedrooms, 7 in the master bedroom, 3 in the master bathroom, 7 in the living room/office, 16 in the family room/kitchen and 6 in the dining room.

BUT 1 WALL OUTLET IN THE F-ING GARAGE!!!

Nice.

I'm glad I mowed on Saturday. It started raining yesterday afternoon. I'll try to mow again next weekend. I'm at the point that I have to mow at least once a week these days. I also need to resead some places. I should have done that on Saturday.

Elliott's New Bedroom

We spent the weekend painting Elliott's bedroom from floor to ceiling.

Before:

After:

"I'm a painter....and Scotch Blue is my tape."

After we took the tape off:

The flash really emphasizes the imperfections in the ceiling. It looks a lot better in person but I really didn't like the ceiling paint. Fucking Sherwin Williams.

We still have to button up some things. I have to finish cleaning the windows and we have some touching up to do. The tape pulled some paint off on the ceiling and the white strips. We also have to finish the inside of the door. We are leaving the outside brown to match the rest of the doors but we will be painting the inside of the door white to match all the trim.

Then we have to steam clean the carpets and move the furniture back in. We also have to figure out drapes. We're thinking navy blue.

He likes it. We hope to have it all done by the end of the week. I want to clean the carpets before we move everything back in. And at this moment I do not have a steam cleaner. I do have $200 in Sears gift cards though.

I haven't opened up the pressure washer yet but it was $270 at Sears. Not bad considering the electric ones were about $200 and they were 1700 PSI vs 2700PSI.

Little Update

So....been a while since I did any updates.

Last year I did some work on the patio. The brick were really dirty so I pressure washed it and leveled some of the bricks. I will need to do some more work on the path this spring.

I also pressure washed and restained the deck boards. It looked a lot better and with the winter we have had the boards are probably happy to have the extra coat.

I really miss working on the yard. It's been weeks since I saw the grass. One of the storm wrecked a lot of the pine trees and I lost about 30 branches. No trees but it was a lot of work. I also noticed one of the branch on my cherry tree out front is split and I need to take the branch down.

I have mentioned a bit that we are moving to Louisville later this year so the house is going on the market. We have done some stuff to make it a bit easier to sell like take care of a lot of overgrown shrubs and flower beds. We are also completing some painting work we started inside and wanted to make the kitchen look a bit more desirable.

Yesterday we had a friend come over and take out the bulkhead over the island. We hated it and it made the kitchen look even more dated than it was.

Before:

After:

I helped with the demo but mudding drywall is not something I am good at. The friend working on it is a contractor. My wife told me it is good when I know I am in over my head. He is coming over for the next couple days to skim coat the area then we will paint the ceiling white. We didn't really like the tan.

Once painted we will have 2 pendents in there where we had one recessed bulb. I think it will look great.

We are also going to complete the trim work you see in the background. We will repaint the trim from tan to white. We're also looking at updating all of the cabinet hardware.

Some may ask...why bother if you are selling? The one hangup we had with the house was the kitchen. So far it is the one room that we have done the most work to change the look of it. This is what the kitchen looked like when we first bought the house.

So far we removed the old tile back splash and replaced it with glass, we repainted the walls and most of the trim, replaced the light over the breakfast table and will be doing the lights over the island and replaced all the electrical outlets. I think it will look better. The appliances are older but the work better than any kitchen appliance I have owned.

Interesting on the bulkhead...seems to have served no purpose. Definitely looks better without it. Good luck with the sale!

Looks nice!

Did you do the electrical yourself or did your contractor friend do it?

Yep....no purpose other than back in the mid 1980's people thought it was cool.

Thanks.

He did it but the wiring was already there on a separate line. There was an interior flood in a recessed can. We just added the new boxes for the pendent. It was easy work.

Yes, because you took the bulkhead out, then in the last picture of the "afters" it was back

Yeh. 4 good years. I guess I can post some more pics. We redid the basement and all the carpet. Also redid all the walkways. Next year I may be redoing the deck.

Also....since it's been 2 years since I updated. I was planning on moving in 2014 to KY. I ended up changing jobs so we can stay in PA. We never moved.

Been doing some work in the kitchen. The wife and I decided to get new appliances for our anniversary. We got both from Best Buy as Open Box items. I've done Open Box items in the past with no issues. We love the look of it but we have had some issues with it. Unfortunately this one had a faulty thermostat for the oven so it shut down the oven when we ran a clean cycle. It's covered for 5 years so Best Buy is fixing the issues. It seems like a lot of newer ovens have similar issues with the Self Cleaning feature. Other than that there is nothing wrong with it. No cosmetic damage at all. If it fries another thermostat then maybe I'll be pissed. Truth is we saves so much on it we both decided we can live with some headaches as long as it gets taken care off in the long run.

Yes - I am a cheap bastard. But if I paid new for both items it would have cost over $4000 with just the 1 year manufacturer's warranty. We ended up with both items delivered for less than $1900 and they both have a 5 year warranty from Geek Squad. What would you do?

The range was a slide in so all we had to do was remove the old GE and slide in the new Samsung. The fit was perfect.

Old:

New:

We are going to get an over range microwave at some point and swap out the hood. It will also free up some counter space next to the refrigerator and possibly free up the space where we have our toaster oven. That may be in the summer.

The refrigerator required a lot more work. The old refrigerator was an 18 cubic foot GE. Unfortunately the opening was 35 inches and new refrigerators mostly measure around 36 inches. So....much like what all my ex-girlfriends said to me in the past....I needed 2 more inches. I took out the cabinets and counters on the left side of the refrigerator and moved it 2 inches. That allowed for a little more than 0.5 inches on either side. I decided to remove the cabinet above the fridge. It was serving no purpose. Sorry I took the pic after I ripped out the cabinets. The new fridge got installed last Friday. No issues with it at all. And now we have a 28 cubic foot fridge and an 18 cubic foot BEER fridge.

Nice! Looks awesome. How do you like that Samsung range? We are looking at getting the exact same one for our kitchen remodel in a few weeks.

I'm a bit ticked off that I fried the thermostat and / or thermal probe with the self cleaning mode so we haven't been able to use the oven.

The stove top works great. The Fast Boil burners do a good job getting hot. There does seem to be a big difference between 8 and 10. Its a bit different than our old HE. That said I think the heat is very even. It's easy to clean up. It's black ceramic so it fingerprints easy. But I've really only had to clean the top once.

We should have our oven fixed tomorrow so in can update you then. The oven is large. About 1.4 cubic feet larger than what we had before. The duel convection is nice. From what I've read it takes a while to warm to the temp you set but it's good once it gets there. I had the same issue with our old GE. It took a while to heat up.

The styling is great. I like it more than any of the other options we saw. The stainless cleans easy but it does fingerprint easy. The touch pad is easy to keep clean. You will also read that the burners turn on easy. They do. It will take some getting use to. I think the newer model corrected that. You can also look at that one.

I searched for open box items for appliances I wanted for our recent reno..but I had specific models. Just missed out on a great deal on the range, too.

That said...everything I read about ranges in reviews say DONT use the self clean feature, ever.

i don't remember the specifics but it usually boils down to being more problematic than worthwhile.

As for samsungs. I have been enjoying my new Samsung range quite a bit.

My refrigerator is Maytag, my range is Whirlpool, and dishwasher is Frigidaire. I enjoy the irony of it.

Like the updates but is it just the pic or does the fridge really stick out? We have all Samsung appliances (15 months old now); the range and fridge are great but I have never come across a worse dishwasher. I always rinse plates, much to my wife's dismay but even with me pre-rinisng, they rarely get clean.

Just a heads up!

It does stick out a bit. About 2 inches more than the last one. It doesn't bother us too much. I think it looks more out than normal because the base cabinets are not very deep.

Thanks for the heads up on the dishwasher. We just swapped out the old one we had with a newer Fridigiare Gallery we got when out in-laws redecorated. It works really well but eventually a Bosch will take it's place.
