HVAC Advise

My central air system froze up (block of ice) several times during the winter. Now the AC can't get the house below 75 degrees. I have to push the reset on the outside unit to get the compressor/fan run for about 30 minutes.

The unit was installed in 1993. I had one contractor to come out and his total was about $9K for a Trane but he wanted to redo the duct work etc. Would just installing a new outside (dual scroll) compressor work about as good as ripping everything out?

Thanks

Since it's nearly 20 years old it would probably be much more efficient to replace the whole thing. Get multiple bids. There is huge markup on this stuff.

Should of done it last year to get the $1,500 tax credit. I paid $6000 before the credit for a new A/C unit for my downstairs. I have already noticed a huge difference in my electricity bill for the comparable april/may months.

Get a couple quotes on different units. My unit is a Trane.
