how to put rugs on wood floors

Is there some kind of protective mat or lining I can put under my rugs? In the new home we have wood floors and I want to put something under the breakfast table (a rug) to keep the feet warm.

Yeah you can buy a protective mat to go under the rug, it can also add support, making it more comfortable to walk on. Its kind of like the mat they use to put down under the wood floors. Also, its good to put something that will stick to the floor cause you do not want your rug to slide out from under you. Look at home depot or lowes they will both have stuff.

Most places that sell rugs will sell these also. It's a squishy foam material that tends to not slip on wood and vinyl floors. I know Target sells it, because I just bought one there last weekend, but I've seen them all over the place. Works great for our hallway runner.

Wow, we have that same liner on a 2.5' by 7' runner and it's fine. Rug never moves. We also have a larger one on an area rug... and it works great there as well.

My parents actually have one under an area rug that's on a carpet... and it works like a charm there too.

cTLgo - I'd recommend trying what's in the picture first. Not expensive, can be cut, and from what I've seen, works fine. You can get them at places like Linen-N-Things, Bed Bath and Beyond, Target, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Home Depot, Lowes, and so on....

It's also sold as shelf liners for kitchen cabinets. We have that on our rugs too.

I've seen several different brands of these anti-slip pads out there, so I'm sure the quality on them varies quite a bit. I don't remember the name of the Target brand that we got. The runner itself is 25" X 94" doesn't move at all with the pad underneath.

Yeah, we got ours from Linens-N-Things and it's been fine for the last 3 years or so (in two different houses on two different kinds of hardwood floors).

My parents finally got smart and put that protective coating underneath the runner in the hallway; of course, they only did it after my mother fell and broke her wrist
