How often to seal a blacktop driveway?

How often to seal a blacktop driveway?
Seems that a lot of my neighbors have this done yearly. What is the purpose? Required?

i thought it was yearly too... it would help prevent it from cracking... especially if you live in area where there is snow, i think salt is very damaging...

I've seen some of my neighbors do it here, it appears to help repel dirt on concrete driveways so theres less pressure washing to be done.

It doesn't need to be sealed every year unless you live in desert climate where it turns grey. Every three years is fine. People sometimes seal every year to keep the driveway looking new.
