HOA Woes
You haven't voted them out yet? I bet changing it will make a lot of people stay and get THEM to move. The mass exodus of old people from our neighborhood has finally started once the board turned over. They upped the dues this year from $200/yr to $250/yr due to overall maintenance and you should have seen the uproar. Board (now young people) basically said, come to the meeting on this date to share your thoughts. If not, STFU and deal with it. No one showed.

Yea, they just keep putting off the next board meeting. We were supposed to have one in February but they didn't and from what I've read and been told, it appears they are doing it to prevent a recall of the board. If I get the signatures needed to overthrow them, they would have a meeting to verify my signatures are legit and then the board would change. That being said, I need 60 days between a meeting and a recall it appears so if I say here are the sigs, they can say oh wait, we're having a board meeting next week so it's invalid and then try and sway the community.
They've blocked our solar so long that the solar company finally just gave up. We signed a contract in I think April of last year, were willing to pay a lot of money for solar plus the solar company pulled permits (they paid the money up front) and such because the HOA made them before reviewing it (no one else needs permits before a review besides us and other young couples). Permits are pricey and the state of Florida says they can't block our solar install but since our contract was up, we didn't re-sign. If we do, the solar company would bring in lawyers to fight the HOA and I'm sure they would win but we loose because now we live in a community that hates us more.
On the plus side, they are miserable fat old fucks that eat lots of junk so their bodies will give out in time.

Hell, you could start printing flyers and putting them on people's doorsteps saying you're pushing for this. Seems like you'd have no problem getting the backing you need. And as far as the solar goes, I'd definitely take them to court on it and shove it down their throats. No one is going to hate you any more than they already do so fuck it.
Whelp, had a lot of community support, people signed proxies, lots promised to come to the meeting, the hoa was PISSED. I have never seen them so active in the community. This morning I started texting to confirm everyone was going tonight and people started saying they were afraid and asked I not submit their proxies. 5 owners showed out of 21 but with a board of 5, they remained in power. My senior neighbor calmly said she wanted to see us get along, communicate, etc and the board members started screaming and cursing at her. She eventually left in tears so I guess they win, we need to sell.
I now understand why what I called ‘old people’ when I was younger, were always so cranky and distrusting of people; it’s homeownerahip. Contractors, roofer’s, hoa’s, they all suck and as positive as you are, you get beat down when you become an old person; oh and of course it’s Whiskers fault.

Edit: You should write an editorial in your local newspaper as an opinion piece. That'll get them going.

Also, get a lawyer to read the HOA bylaws and make sure they are following them to the letter. If not, nail them to the wall.
When elections come around, make sure you bring up each and every one of those situations where the bullied people, yelled, etc. The more people on your side the better.

I would burn that place down slowly
Need to be clandestine, no cameras, no witnesses.
Bring in a pal from out of town to do some deets
Can start by bringing the place down a notch.
Junk cars, tagged walls, fuck up the road (paint / oil), brake fluid on their cars
Fuck with their relationships like leave business cards to whore houses in their cars.
Slip it through the window of the backseat. Panties by the door of their cars.
Anonymous calls to confess affairs.
Start some drama on nextdoor
new threads about getting car broken into and stuff stolen
Heroin needles being found by the play park
Then complain about every fucking thing you can about the grounds the HOA is responsible for
Make their volunteer work absolutely miserable, like not even worth it if they were paid
Keep complaining about visibility of where the money is going
Threaten to bring it up to the state AG's office and how you think they're committing fraud
Then kill their pets, their mothers, and put a horses head in their bed.
Yes.

HOA's suck. I live in one.
I've been there for almost 3 years and we have went through 3 different management companies. NO reasoning behind any of them. Board members are on Nextdoor and just say come to the last Tuesday of the month meeting.
I wish I bought a house in the other subdivision, their HOA is on top of shit. Giving out fines for garages packed with shit, nice ass clubhouse, pool year around and a gym. While we get stuck with a pool only open from May- September, people with a bunch of shit in their garage, and a shitty clubhouse that looks like a hospital cafeteria.

Don't let them win. I agree with doing everything in your power to make their lives miserable. Maybe I am a terrible person but with what you are going through I would find joy in making their lives hell.
Thanks guys and love the suggestions
So we have one yearly meeting with all directors being elected and I campaigned my ass off and really wanted a positive change. In doing so, older members of the community said I would fail because the board would slander me, turn us against each other, and wow did they. The people that warned me, wanted to support me but were afraid for their pets and properties so they didn't vote. In speaking with long time residents, the anger and hate towards the board was really eye opening and honestly kind of scary that 70-80 year olds have so much hatred toward the board.
One board member was on a special task force with the FBI and I believe he is now on with the FBI so I think I'll pass on your suggestions to stir things up. He's cool to me but backs the board and I'm sure he could make my life NOT fun and who wants to purposely mess with neighbors, regardless of how bad they suck.
We've struggled with the HOA for most of the time living here and we are literally angry/sad coming home so it's time. I hate to let them win but I hate becoming as miserable as they are and checking our yard daily, to be sure they haven't tried to mess with our dogs. They haven't threatened anything like this but I don't know how far they would take things.
I've contacted the state attorney's office and they said there is very little they can do. I have an attorney but I'm not sure I want to get into a legal battle because the board has sued others and not backed down. The county home inspector came out to verify we didn't put solar panels on because he couldn't understand why we would spend so much on permits and not do it, he told us to get a lawyer and go after them but again, it will drag on costing us and the community time and money; blows.

That's horrible dude, I'm not sure what to tell you beyond going the legal route. If that FBI dude is a good guy, he won't go that far as that would be definitely illegal and unethical in general. I wouldn't worry about that because backing the board and doing something else is a whole different ball game.
Time to move I guess. I'm lucky that the board here is pretty good and the only things they deal with are stupid disagreements and dumb shit.

Wow... Sorry it's not worknig out yet. The good news, though, is that you are younger than them and they will die of old age before you do! Then you can run the board. Of course, by then you may be old and crotchety, too..
^^
Coming in late but my sympathy to your wife and you.
As many of us know some HOA can be brutal and the incredibly stupid politics and petty s^&* that is so much time/energy/money lost.
Best of luck with the situation, there may be no solution but your moving would definitely solve it.

Our HOA went bankrupt due to a lawsuit.
They were sued for $14 million for some legal issues with some of the sub-HOA's. Anyway, the sub-HOA's won the lawsuit which resulted in the master HOA filing for bankruptcy and essentially dissolving. They sent out a bunch of sob letters to the residents and posted some stuff on the city facebook page about how they things they took care off will be neglected and home values will drop. On the contrary, the green spaces and snow plowing has only gotten better since the city took over and my home price has risen by about 4% in the last 6 months according to Zillow and the comps in the area. Literally everyone I've talked to is glad they're gone. Chances are, some other HOA (or the existing one after the legalities are settled) will come back in. But with any luck it will at least require some sort of "vote" which will be in opposition of it.
The real winner is one of my old neighbors before we moved to a different part of the city. He told me he had over $7000 of liens placed on his home from the HOA for a whole ton of violations and failure to pay dues. He always had tons of crap out in his yard like old motorcycles and car parts. His dogs were usually chained to a post on his porch and he always left his garbage can out. Oh, and he had this old ugly camper from like 1970 or something parked on the street most of the time in the summer as well as a few old rustbox jalopies which the HOA really hated. I never cared. He was a cool guy and his stuff never bothered me. When the HOA dissolved so did all the liens. He always wanted to move closer to his work so when the HOA dissolved he immediately sold and moved.

Georgia city sued by fed-up residents over 'ridiculous' fines for chipped paint, driveway cracks | Fox News
WTF
Hilda Brucker went down to the municipal court in October 2016 after receiving a phone call. She hadn’t received a formal summons or known of any wrongdoing; instead, she thought she needed to clear a ticket.
But when she arrived at the Doraville, Georgia, courthouse, Brucker said she was placed before a judge and prosecutor who accused her of violating city code -- because of cracks in her driveway.
She was fined $100 and sentenced to six months criminal probation, even though this was the first time she was made aware her driveway was considered a problem.
Eventually the charges were dropped, but Brucker said Doraville “went too far” in going after her for the driveway’s appearance....

Some of the amazing fines in that GA town
Brucker isn’t the only Doraville citizen to fall “victim” to its fees. Jeff Thornton, a neighbor, was fined $1,000 and threatened with an arrest warrant because he had a “disorganized” pile of wood in his backyard, according to IJ. Thornton told the nonprofit that he used the wood for cooking or building birdhouses.
Aside from residents, drivers passing through Doraville -- many on their way to or from Atlanta -- have also faced excessive ticketing, according to IJ. Janice Craig was given a $215 ticket for holding up traffic when she attempted to switch lanes while driving through town.
