Fridge...

Our fridge died.

Looking at a Samsung French door model. All the ratings show it as 4+ stars, Consumer Reports had virtually nothing bad to say about it, but many of the actual written reviews are negative (who writes a good review, right?)

Anyone have any experience with Samsung fridges?

Here is the model I am looking at: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung...?skuId=4980442

or the slightly larger

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung...?skuId=2960173

Costco sells both as does BB and I am sure all the appliance stores in town... Need it fast, got no foods!

This is the only thing I know about Samsung fridges and it appears to be a common problem. Maybe they fixed it by now?

That seemed to be the only consistent complaint in the reviews I read... and yet it still has a 4.3* rating, so maybe it's not a pervasive issue.

I have a 2014 model Samsung fridge never had any issues, its quite and keeps the my beer super cold, my only complaint is keeping the stainless clean (kids) but that would be with any SS product.

I've had a Samsung side-by-side with ice maker for a few years now. It's been rock solid. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one.

I just bought the LG french door counter depth with ice and water in door. If you want/need counter depth, it's the only way to go since you get the largest interior volume vs the competitors. For non-counter depth, I think it's basically whatever is on sale that week and you'll be fine. I'm sure all the fridges on the market are equally as reliable/unreliable at this point and they all pretty much look the same too. The only appliance I'd have an opinion on is a dishwasher since there are tangible differences between brand and model performance. Beyond that, a fridge is a fridge and a range is a range. Not much to them.

Don't ned counter depth, luckily.

Costco (and a local place) is selling a 4 piece Samsung set with the https://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung...?skuId=5325802 dishwasher.

Our DW is 15 years old, loud as a jet engine, and smells. ANYthing will be an improvement.

My only input is that I don't like having one big freezer drawer. I used to have a model like that and often had to dig through and take a lot of stuff out to get what I wanted.

Then I switched to an LG with two drawers and I like that setup a lot more.

Specifically regarding Samsung fridges, I never had an issue with them (not that I have a huge sample size to draw from).

My LG fridge has the linear compressor technology and I do notice it is quieter. FWIW we recently had to service it because the ice maker door stopped closing. This was under warranty.

my parents have a similar fridge and there is a piece that runs along the left side door that pivots when it's closed and helps hold the right door I believe. You can see it in the picture with the doors open. Anyways that stopped pivoting on its own when you close the door and the part wasn't cheap. No other complaints. I believe those pieces are pretty common among French door fridges.

Kitchenaid or Bosch were the ones to go for a few years ago when I bought mine. Samsung may have improved since then but I'm not sure. I haven't looked into it much. That said, you definitely get what you pay for with a dishwasher. Go as high end as you can before you get into the frivolous features like the third rack.

This is the one we got, ended up getting it for $2k which is almost half the MSRP.

Appliances were delivered today, yay! No more dorm fridge for a family of three...

Unfortunately, the 3rd party delivery service Costco contracts with effed up the scheduling of the installation of the dishwasher and microwave, so I have to wait until tomorrow for that. Not the end of the world.

fridge is great, feels bigger then the old one even thought they are same volume.

Two questions for those of you with Samsung appliances:

1. How cold is the water that comes out of the fridge? Ours is "kinda cool" for the very first half glass and then it's pretty much room temp...

2. If you have a Samsung dishwasher, can you open the door and lay it flat (fully opened) without the bottom rack being pulled out or does the door have a lot of tension in the hinge that pops the door up about 15 degrees? Our pops up and makes it tough to open the bottom rack one handed (with dishes, etc. in the other hand). Basically, the only way the door stays fully open is if the bottom rack is open and exerting force/weight on it. Wondering if the door tension is adjustable...

Good choice on the Samsung. We've had one for about 4 years now and it's been trouble free. The only small issue was buildup of ice on the condenser, which I discovered only when it started having a hard time cooling and took the back panel off. From now on, I leave the "energy saver" feature off which has solved the problem.

We purchased one without the ice/water on the front. It's on the inside but we never use it. So I'm afraid I can't comment on the temp.

Mine had the ice maker/water on the front. Everyone who came over marveled at how cold and delicious the water was. I had the issue of warm water initially but once I removed and reinstalled the water filter it cooled the water that it stored without issue. That might help

It seems if you have to replace the water filter on a brand new fridge, that is a warranty issue. A new appliance should work as expected. If not, get them to fix it. You deserve cold water from your new refrigerator.

We have a stainless side by side we bought new in 2011, and a black side by side in the garage I picked up used for $35 (major steal). The only issue I've had with either was ice buildup on the inside one's condenser that eventually built up enough for the fan to hit and tap as it spun. I had to empty the fridge, remove the middle shelves, and pop off the back cover from the inside to melt the ice with a hair dryer. Honestly the longest part was taking the food out. This happened after six years of running the fridge on 34 degrees. I backed it off to 38 in hopes I was just running it a little too hard. Still runs great though. The first quart of our water is probably 40-45 degrees before it starts to drop off. I haven't had a chance to run a water line to the garage one yet.

My Whirpool dishwasher door sits up a little bit unless the bottom shelf is all the way out. Makes pushing the drawer back in, full of dishes, a bit easier I guess.

We have a ss side by side that is 2 years old and we don't have any issues with it. It has the water and ice dispenser that we really don't use, but it's nice to have but not necessary.

We have a similar fridge and also matching range and microwave. All 3 look great. The range and fridge were Open Box from Best Buy. We knew we may have issues with them but overall we spent about $1800 for both items which included a 5 year warranty. I think we saved over $2000. I can deal with some headaches for $2000.

Let me know if you got a range as well and I will give you more details on what we have to do to prevent it.

These are the ones we got.

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung...?skuId=5236091

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung...?skuId=9172054

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung...?skuId=8929005

I've had some issues with the range but it was covered by the warranty and Geek Squad. I kept frying the high limit thermostat when I ran a clean cycle. The fridge works great. We've had the doors and seals replaced by Geek Squad as well due to damage during delivery. The one thing I would continue to check is the ice in the ice maker. Seems to be prone to clumping. Our tech said it is a pain in the ass complaint but normal. Truth is I don't use either dispenser often. Once every couple days I empty the ice into a bin. I use it for water every now and then.

Let me know what your thoughts are on the dishwasher. Our Geek Squad rep said he did not like the quality of the Samsung Dishwashers. We have a Frigidaire Gallery stainless in there now. If and when it craps out we are getting a Bosch. By far the best dishwasher I have ever had.

Most dishwashers have slots in the door and frame for the spring to connect to.
See if you have that and you can bring the spring in a little to reduce the tension on it.

Ravi, we have slightly different models, but good info thanks!

Re: the dishwasher, it works really well, there are just a few ergo issues I am getting used to. The door not staying fully open is one (will check what NSXNEXT mentioned tonight). Also, it smells. Maybe it;s because it holds so much more than our previous one that we end up leaving dishes in it longer and therefore they start to smell, but it;s kind of stinky when you open it. Finally, our bowls appear to be bigger than what Samsung used to design the otp rack center strip (where bows are "supposed" to go) so we get less bowls in than we would like, but it's overall a very good dishwasher thus far.

You may want to try one a dishwasher cleaner. I used the one below. Also, did they swap the waste hose when you changed the dishwasher? You may want to get that swapped out.
