That's funny
Not offended at all...
The thread starter asked about Dysons. Everyone has an opinion about them yet has never owned one.

I have the 6 Series, if you need to be able to shut off the brush while keeping the suction going get the 7.

Case in point.
Your post says nothing about Dyson.
Have you ever emptied a Dyson?
Push a button and the canister comes off the vac. Push another button and the bottom opens to empty contents.
My 1st grade nephew figured it out without any problems or mess.
You can turn the brushes off on all Dyson's.
How much is the 7 series from your website?

We actually replaced our Sears Kenmore canister with a Dyson over a year ago and it was a great decision for us. The Sears wouldn't pick up shit anymore (after only about 2-3 years).
- The Dyson works as well today as the day we bought it.
- I've never had dust, etc... go everywhere when emptying it. You'd have to be a complete moron to make a mess when emptying this thing.
- The Dyson picks up more now than the Kenmore did when it was new.
- I think it is somewhat overpriced, but we have been more than happy with the performance
- If you're changing from something like a Kenmore canister to a Dyson, the initial impression, for me at least, was that the Dyson is made more cheaply (even though it's much more expensive), but after much use, it has held up much better than the Sears did a the same point. I think it's because the Kenmore was easier to break if you're rough with it. The Dyson, with all it's plastic, can rebound from rough use easier.
-I was always cleaning out the roller bar on the Kenmore. I had to replace 2 parts of the Kenmore over the time we had it plus multiple belt replacements. Soon, we will have had the Dyson for just as long and I haven't had to replace a damn thing on it yet.

I would buy another in a heartbeat after seeing this thing in action for over a year.

BTW, we have the red one and the small roller attachment (for stairs, etc.). I think it's a DC-14.

If I recall correctly a 6 is about $400 and a 7 is about $550. Bags are $2 each. I get about 3 months from a bag.

So there is no dust cloud when you drop that stuff in the trash? How often do you empty the cup?

I looked at a Dyson, I don't like how fat it is up front. It can't get under as much stuff as any other upright I've used. I also didn't like how the hose came out of the handle. The plastic felt thin and cheap. Look at the bottom of the Simplicity, metal. Also compare the brushes on the Dyson to the Simplicity.

My vac was made in USA, a Dyson is made in Malaysia. The Britts sure were pissed when he moved his factory.

When shopping, the vac guy did say that Dyson makes the best canister. I just didn't care for it.

Warranty, Dyson 2 years, Simp 6 3 years, Simp 7 5 years. Believe me, I shopped.

I paid 430.00 for the Dyson at Costco (if it breaks I take it back and get a new one).
No dust cloud at all.. not sure where that is coming from..
I empty after every use cause it gets full everytime.
At first I was concerned about it being made of plastic. No problems as of yet (3 yrs) and cough*costco*cough.
Meh they're just Britts let em be pissed
The Dyson may not be for you, but you shoudn't bash it unless you have had a bad exp. with it.

With a little polish these vac threads could get as good (or bad) as the watch threads. At least I understand vacs, I don't understand watches

Got the purple one. I love it and the wife loves it.

After having a Hoover that lasted only 3 years and a top line Eureka that ate drive belts for the carpet beater at regular intervals, which were not available except online from them, I'll take the Dyson any day. It sucks up all the hair our collie sheds. Emptying is much less dusty than removing a bag from any other vacuum we've had. Plus it's holding up much better than the previous machines.

I would buy it again in an instant.

Consumer Reports

Vacs were rated in both Oct05 & Mar06 issues. I scanned them in but the files were pretty large...over 5mb in total. How do you want them? I don't want to bother uploading each.

So, from what I'm hearing nobody who has owned one has been dissappointed with their Dyson. But it's possible that I might get a better overall value if I go with a cheaper vacuum from another manufacturer, that may provide comparable performance.

If someone paid 500 for a vacuum they'll tend to be positive about it to avoid looking foolish if its really a piece of junk. CR comparison tests gives the brutal truth.

I have the Dyson D07 and it is great. I also get Consumer Reports and after having tried some of the others. i like the Dyson the best for alctual cleaning. Ergonomis could be better (as they are on the Hoover windtunnel V2), but I haven't matched the cleaning power.

Really? does CR use the vacuums for 3 years before publishing their conclusions?

I don't buy the "if you paid 500 for it, you'r going to be positive about it" argument. I've paid high prices for a bunch of things in my life, and I wouldn't hesitate to be brutally honest about their performance, especially here.

I paid 30k for an Acura back in 01 and I fully admit it was a POS
If I paid any amount for a piece of junk I absolutley would not recommend someone else do the same.

How can CR comparisons give a brutal truth? Cause they took 3 seconds to run a vac over a piece of carpet

Run every vac everyday for 3 years then do a review.

This is problem I have with every magazine I have ever read that does a product review. Tell me how that vac/car/etc is doing 5 years from now. Even the 1 year update that some car mags do is misleading. Any car should be able to go 1 year with only minor issues.

Just so everyone knows, this is precisely why I started this thread. I want to know from people who paid for and use the vacuum day in and day out.

I can read CR and know what they think, but are they the end all be all of product recommendation? not for me.

Give me a good sample of brutally honest consumers over a professional product testing service any day.

Maybe that came out wrong but my opinion is that CR is one of the most respected institutions for what it does. How many of us can ever perform standardized side-by-side tests of 3 or 4 models of a product muchless something like 30 at CR?

Judging a product thru the opinion from an individual is useful but again they've not compared many products before giving a review. I mainly read other people reviews to find if they strike at things that might be important to me, whereas CR might be more concerned with how each model fares performing a specific task.

FWIW, I don't always check with CR before I buy anything...a good review by someone I trust can easily sway me to make a purchase.

Well put, however, the thread is asking about 1 type of vac not 30.
Not one person in this thread who owns a Dyson has said anything negative about them. To me, that speaks volumes. Holds more weight than a CR review.

My problem is that most of these vacuums were made for your average carpet style house. I only have laminated floors so I don't know if the dyson or Kenmmore would be good for it?

FWIW, I bought an Oreck XL 21 ($699) last year and it performs flawless the day I bought it. I bought it based on someones recommendation on this board. What's so good about it is it has 21 year warranty, and 21 years of free maintenance service ($30/visit or $630 for 21 years). Any problems with it whatsoever, I would just bring it back to the dealer and either get it fixed or replaced. I would test out vaccums first before buying them. I was going to get a Dyson, but the Oreck sales person showed me the differences between bagged vaccums, and bagless vaccums with dust when changing the bag. (see Oreck's infomercial) Not sure if Sears sells Dysons, but you can test out vaccums at Sears like Hoover, Eureka, and Kenmore. Not sure where you can test out a Dyson.....

Not sure..
I do know the Dyson has automatic height adjustment & you can turn the rotating brushes off so they don't scratch the floors.

Another question I have is, what is an acceptable lifespan of a vac for you?

I ask because I don't think I've owned one that wasn't complete crap by 5 years old. I hope my current vac lasts longer than that or I'm going back to the $100 special.

Like I said earlier, we use ours about 4 times a week.
I would like to get 8-10 years out of it.

I'm surprised the Hoover Windtunnel was at the top of the list.

We have one. Bought it two years ago from BJ's Wholesale Club and it sucks a$$.

Somewhat pricey too.

I have the Dyson Animal Ball (DC15).

Got it couple of months ago. I have no complaints at all. The proce was a little high, but so far it's been great.

I hate changing/buying bags. The Kenmore upright I had before was a piece. It smelled after one room. The Dyson does not smell at all, even when the canister gets full. The DC15 is a little on the heavy side, but the length of attachment tubes is plenty long. It's a pleasure to push around furniture with the ball also.

Based on the rather short ownership experince, I would buy another.
