DUST : I hate it

My house is always full of dust. Any suggestions on how to eliminate it or reduce it to a minimum ?
We have central heat/air and we use the air all the time in the summer. I change the two air filters every 30 days as recommended. In the colder months, we use our propane gas to heat the entire house. During this time the air circulation is off.

Two recommendations.
1. Get your ducts cleaned. It's not a scam, really makes a difference.
2. Use a quality filter in your HVAC. The $2 blue ones suck.

We have the same problem in my house.

How often do you get your ducts cleaned, doopstr?

I only had it done once in my last house. Before I had it done I would always find dust rings behind picture frames that were on the wall for 6 months. We used to always gets some kind of shadowing in wall corners too. When I repainted, the shadowing would be back in about 6-12 months. After the duct cleaning and another fresh coat of paint that never happened again.

I think I will have it done every 5 years. My current house doesn't have a dust problem and I want to keep it that way. BTW we used Macy's to clean our ducts. I forget what it cost, $150-$200 maybe.

I had the same issue as well but cleaning the ducts every 5 years or so seems to help keep it to a minimum. A quality Air filter, replacing it often and vacuuming often helps as well

I admit, I've been using the cheap blue filters. I thought if I changed them on the first of every month that it wouldn't matter. So, any recommendations on a "Quality" furnace filter ? I've seen the pleated types which cost a whole lot more. Are these worth the price ?

^^^ Ace hardware makes some good ones. I think they're just as good as the 3M's but half the price.

We have one of those Honeywell HEPA filters that we run when we are not home at full blast. Also, when cleaning we run it too - cleaning seems to just move the dust around. In any case, the filter does an amazing job of reducing dust (and hair) in the house. We have a cat so dander and hair is a constant feature of our house.

Our house is smallish <1300sqft, if it was larger I would just run 2 of those things.

Oh and on not using cheap furnace filters.

I buy the 3M Filtrete filters. I dont see the price that big of a thing to help keep dust and allergens (i have bad allergies) to a minimum. Ive used the standard 3m filters as well (couldnt really tell much of a difference) but id rather stick with a quality filter.

Hey now tell me who would appreciate the presence of dusts when so many arrangements are made to safeguard from it. I never thought the ducts needed a cleaning or replacement and was always pondering what was the source of this reckless dust prevailing in my home. Thanks for solving my problem too today itself I will go and replace them as they are about to be five years in operation now and I expect to see a marked difference and relish in a dust free home.
