. The ONLY thing it is not practical for is stairs, because it is rather heavy. The new Dyson Ball is a lot smaller and lighter though.
I have no issue with stairs and mine. The retractable hose reaches from top to bottom (or bottom to top) and the chair/beater bar attachment does a great job on them
I prefer an upright because the only thing you have to drag around behind you is the cord. You can move stuff with one hand and operate the vac with the other.
I honestly can't think of a situation where I'd prefer a canister.

I have some cheap Hoover I bought at Wally World over ten years ago. It works fine. I used it on fully carpeted houses/apartments for about two years. Since then, it's seen minimal use since I only have a couple of rugs to vacuum because the entire house is hardwoods or tile. I use it more vacuuming the car than I do the house.
Well, I bought one of those upright Dysons today. It sure looks pretty futuristic, with lots of gizmos and clear plastics. And a lot of plastics. The only real complaint, however, is how disturbing it quickly filled with dirt and cat fur after vacuuming my bedroom. I vacuum regularly, and thought it was clean, but obviously not. So far it seems to work well. Not sure it was worth $600, but I'll guess I'll see after I've used it a few times.
Yeah, it's pretty cool. I don't like the hose attachment however, as it seems a little awkward. And I just accidently vacuumed a bunch of leaves off of a houseplant.

The more pricy ones usually feel like they are constructed better, last longer, make less noise, and suck a little better. If you have an allergy problem is may pay to buy a better machine. I have a Simplicity vac that's about 5-6 years old now. It's takes a beating. I had to replace the cord once but still runs good.
It was a sad day for my Simplicity 6 Series. My son decided to jump up and down on it and cracked the housing and a few other things. It needed over $100 in parts so I said F-it. Pisses me off though because it was 8 years old and ran like it was new.
On the bright side I bought a 7 Series because they replaced the 6 Series with some cost reduced POS to compete on the low end.
Since I last posted in this thread my Jaguar died and I purchased a Dyson Ball (DC25) and am very happy. The maneuverability is awesome and suction is more than enough for my needs.
My parents have a $2K Rainbow vacuum, and I borrow it as often as I can. You literally can use a regular vacuum, come back with the Rainbow and pick up 4 times as much stuff that was left behind by a normal vacuum. That thing is worth it's weight in gold, I just wish I had 2 grand to buy my own, the thing never loses suction either
Our new house is all hardwood downstairs, except the master & laundry room.
We bought a Neato Botvac Connected. Runs daily at 4AM. Quiet enough that it doesn't wake anyone (unless it gets stuck somewhere) & does a good job. We have a 70lb Catahoula Leopard Dog that sheds a bit, and the Botvac has no trouble keeping up.
Upstairs, we have either an Oreck or a cheap dirt devil upright.
Why does everyone go crazy about those Dyson stick vacs?
I love my Dysons. I have the new Dyson Ball Animal 2, and the new Dyson V8 Cordless (only due to my kids taking the older one outside to vacuum the house part of their swing set and leaving in the yard to get rained on for 3 days before finding it). Both are awesome and vacuum up everything in their path. The cordless one could replace the corded vacuum easily as far as run time goes and suction, i would just have to empty out the canister more often. Its also nice for the quick clean up jobs and stairs and high up places.
We have a Roomba for the wood floor downstairs and needed/wanted a new vacuum for the stairs and upstairs which is carpet. The big, heavy old vac wasn't cutting it.
We got a small Hoover vac. Had great reviews and we both love it. Very light and maneuverable. And has plenty of suction power.. always is packed with dog hair after a little bit of vacuuming. And a fraction the price of Dysons.
We have an older Neato with upgraded Li-Ion battery, couldn't live without it. For the stairs just a cheap dirt devil. I want to see a Neato or Roomba that does the stairs.

Love ours, we use it more than the bigger Dyson. I think we have a V6 Animal...more than keeps up with the animal pictured below.

Same. Love it. More than keeps up with this guy and the epic shedding he does:
New vacuum time. Some reports are saying the miele dynamic u1 is good but the thing is $500. Some reports point to the dyson cinetic and a shark. We have three dogs who shed and this vacuum will stay on one floor. Most of this floor is tile but the living room is heavy pile carpeting.
We need something that will last a long time.
We have a kenmore elite upstairs and an old kenmore elite in the basement.
yes, we have a vacuum on each floor. I know, 1st world problems.
