Do you need an expensive vacuum?

I never really had a vacuum where I'm living now, so I went to Walmart to get one a few days ago. I saw some pretty pricey ones, but just went with one of the cheapest name brand ones I could fine.

I went with this one:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Eureka-Bos...acuum/12174201

I have a 2/2 apt, mostly just thin carpet, and some rugs, and the kitchen/bathrooms are tile. Is this good enough? What's the main benefit of getting of the bigger more expensive ones? Has anyone used one like this? I'm going to vacuum the place tomorrow, so I guess I'll give feedback.

i dont eat over, or walk on my carpet with shoes.

we have the cheapest vaccum money can buy and really dont even need that.

half of the house is hardwood floors (we just have to mop and sweep)
and the front where they are carpet rugs.. never get dirty.

i would reconsider though if i had all carpet and 2 kids maybe... but i lol'ed at my buddy who bought a 800 vaccum from a door to door salesman.. it wasnt any better then one of the lower end ones (like you purchased) from walmart.

I was doing fine with the Eureka but got a Dyson out of convenience. With the Eureka it was a pain to clean the filter after vacuuming, with the Dyson I just press a button and it's clean, the filter gets washed every three months or so.

The new ones at Sears, on sale now, are $199 (which she did not want to pay); regular price is $299

Anyway, I take the Ohm meter to the thing to try and find out whats wrong. Turns out that the wire ribbon that transmits power down the extention wand to the power head fried itself somehow. Ordered up a new $73 extention wand from SearsPartsDirect and all is well.

I bought a $75 Dirt Devil from Target a few years ago for my apartment. I never wore shoes inside, so it didnt get used all that often. I brought it when I moved in with my fiancee, and replaced her old one that wasnt doing well.

We have 3 rabbits that are pretty damn messy, and two cats too, and mine is a champ. It picks up all the fur, plus rogue hay that they toss out of the pen without clogging or winding the hay like her old one did.

My former roommate had a Dyson for picking up after 2 cats and a huge dog, it was nice, but I see no difference in the job it does.

However the Dyson clogged solid a few times and I had to disassemble and clear it, while I have never had a problem with mine, and the rabbits shed like they procreate

I have a Dirt Devil Jaguar bag-less vacuum that a co-worker bought for me when I first moved out of my parents house. I have no idea how much it cost (I'm guessing ~$100 when it was new), but it was free to me! I have a cat and a dog and it picks up their fur/hair no problem. I'm still on the original belt and I'm on a second filter (bought a HEPA rated filter). I think it's ~5 years old now.

I'm happy with it .

From people who've bought stupid expensive ones like Dyson...they say they're worth every penny.

But if you don't have oodles of carpet, it may not be worth it.

I have an Oreck XL21. It was expensive when I bought it almost 7 years ago ($800, but it's probably a hell of a lot cheaper now), it came with a canister vac and a whole lotta accessories. "21" is the years of the warranty. We take it in for a tune-up once a year for maintenance (under warranty). It does what we need it to do, is very lightweight, and works great on carpet and hard floors.

How much are dysons? Miele certainly isn't cheap and they are totally worth it in my opinion.

I think my Dyson Animal was in the $400-$500 range. It's lasted far longer than any vacuum we had at half the price. It gets used all over our fairly large house at least a couple times a week chasing after collie tumbleweeds.

Pretty much. Never had any problems with the miele. Gets used all the time and works very well. I've had shitty uprights for the apartments I've lived in while in school and they were not nearly as good

Yes it is worth it, it still picks up dirt and dust better. I have a dyson, most of my friends have been convinced and have gotten one. I got rid of my oreck, a buddy got rid of his 1.5 year old kirby for one. It was worth every penny!

I dont know if you have worn out or broken any thing on it yet but parts are pretty cheap. I had to replace my hose on my animal DC02 (well over 6 years old now) and ordered it from them and got it in under a week. My vacuum (when my husky was alive r.i.p.) got used heavily a solid 3-4 times a week.

The 2 absolutely most anal women about cleaning use a Hoover Wind tunnel. It is what I use and love it.

I had a Hoover Wind Tunnel where the motor burnt out on me about 3 weeks ago. I had that for about 7 years and it got used an average of 4 times a week... and sometimes twice a day when my dog was shedding a lot.

I replaced it with another < Hoover Wind Tunnel for $100 >. It works pretty well too (picks up crap that you normally can't see with the naked eye), but I miss the old one... it had a much longer cord and a headlight up. I briefly considered a Dyson, but just couldn't justify the price. Didn't know about the lifetime warranty. I thought it was just 5 years? Maybe I should return the Hoover...

I may scour Craigslist for a Dyson. I have heard a lot of positive reviews on them, although my wife can't see spending $300-$500 on a vacuum.

Dyson FTW. My wife went out and bought a DC25 Animal when our cheapy Dirt Devil died. She had to empty out the canister twice vacuuming a small room that had just been vacuumed that morning by the dirt Devil.

The more pricy ones usually feel like they are constructed better, last longer, make less noise, and suck a little better. If you have an allergy problem is may pay to buy a better machine. I have a Simplicity vac that's about 5-6 years old now. It's takes a beating. I had to replace the cord once but still runs good.

That's not too bad. We have a Kenmore Canister Vac which was about $250 when we got it. Going on ~10 years and still works as good as day one with zero problems. If/When this thing ever dies, we'll probably get another one.

We have a Roomba as well. Definitely not good for a primary vacuum. 98% of our first floor is hardwood, so once a month we vacuum and clean it with the Bruce cleaner... then we run the Roomba once a week just to supplement it. But the Roomba isn't really any good as a primary vac... especially on carpets.

Also, gonna move this to H&G...

I've had a few vacuums and the only one that has stood up to my Golden Retriever's hair is my Dyson. It is a bit noisy compared to say a Miele and is also pretty heavy, but it does an outstanding job. I recently moved and wanted to vacuum two area carpets I had before rolling them up to move. I vacuumed each carpet probably 5 or 6 times and the Dyson kept picking up hair that had become embedded in the fibers. I couldn't see them, or feel them, and the carpet didn't smell but the Dyson still kept filling up. I had another vacuum that I left for the next tenant (can't remember what kind) and I tried it on the carpet and it picked up nothing. Ran the Dyson again and it was filling up again. The best part is I bought mine online refurbished for $150. It came with an attachment that was the wrong size. Didn't fit the hose of the model I had because they changed the diameter of the hose between years (according to the CSR I talked to). They sent out the proper attachment free of charge and I received it in less then a week. I highly recommend Dyson. The ONLY thing it is not practical for is stairs, because it is rather heavy. The new Dyson Ball is a lot smaller and lighter though.

^ How long have you had the refurb, any problems?

I've seen a few refurb, but they only have a 6 month warranty. Kinda scared about dropping $250 on a refurb vacuum.
