Small update, but I was tired of having disorganized (and unsafe) storage for my knives and other things in the drawer below my cooktop. So I tossed together this in-drawer knife block. It's made from 1/4" birch plywood and poplar 1x and 2x2s. The hardest part was applying shellac - that stuff got tacky real quick.
This whole stay home thing is actually making me more productive. I'll be finishing another project or two in the next two weeks and starting another shortly.

Knife block looks good.
I have read that it's better to store knives sideways, rather than vertical, but don't know if there's any science/logic behind it.
Our countertop block has all the knives slotted sideways, except steak knives.

Yeah I think that has to do with dulling the blades, but the plywood is somewhat soft, so I'm hoping it won't do too much damage. I'll change it up if there's a noticable issue.

Oh, and the key to shellac is SUPER thin coats in small areas and rub it into the wood (giggity), if you can thin it down with some denatured alcohol then do that as it helps a lot. Some kinds of shellac don't let you do that though so read the can first.
Edit: Looked closer at your pic, you only used the ply for the bottom, nevermind about my comment. Carry on lol.

Yeah I was doing thin coats and trying to rub it into the surface. Maybe it was the heat (it was 80 this weekend), but it was getting really tacky really fast. I'll check out that alcohol trick though - I've got shelves I'm going to building soon and I planned on shellacing them.

Picking this up again. I redesigned the layout slightly and changed the construction of the cabinets to make them easier to put up. Once the weather began to cooperate and I was feeling slightly less lazy, I decided to rent a storage pod to move most of my shit (read- car parts) into it and focus on making some progress in the garage. That consisted of:
Fuck drywall:
This was before touching the ceiling. You can kind of make out how bad those joints were. They didn't mud the joint, then tape, then mud again - they skipped the first mudding. There was nothing under the tape
Two storage shelves were installed above the toolbox (and soon to be purchased fridge), instead of installing cabinets:
Cabinets framed out using framing lumber (105"):
Dry-lok'd the floor where the cabinets were going to reside (I also vapor barrier'd the bottom of the cabinets used composite shims to get them off the floor, just to be sure):
Tossed on some plywood sides to give the cabinets a faux-shaker look, painted the exterior, and installed shelving. Once things settle into place, I'll probably build some custom storage to make it more usable. I plan on building doors as well, but that's not high on the priority list.
The shelves are pretty strong though (don't mind my dad-sneakers):
Then I finally installed my folding workbench. It mounts on the wall and measures 20" deep and 48" long. It's "rated" at a 500lb capacity, but it will never see over 100.
And yeah, there's a nail pop I have to address
As of two days ago:
And then:
I'm a bit anal with the precision cuts I've got some left over cut offs to fill the gaps in the foreground.
As of last night, with all my bullshit moved back in. Please excuse the blurry panorama - I was tired and gave no fucks
You'll notice a patch of flooring that is not completed. A box of tiles was discolored, so I've reached out to Racedeck to get replacements. Once they show up, I can knock out the rest.
A couple other things I knocked out over the last few months -
I finished the stair railing. The brackets were the most expensive parts - they ran about $100 . The railing itself is 2 or 3 inch dowel (I forget the exact size) and then the uprights are just standard non-threaded schedule 40 steel piping:
Painted/stained to match:
I got annoyed with the recycling bin sitting on the floor, so I made a quick bracket to mount it on the wall:
I need to paint it to hide it a bit, but it gets the job done.
A "couple" items still on the to-do list:
Anyone need any parts for a 88-91 Civic/CRX, 92-96 Prelude, FRS/BRZ, or 2G CL??
- Mudding everything. Seriously, those drywall joints were bad. Especially on the ceiling.
- Prime & Paint
- Never again will I mud, sand, prime and paint a 12ft high ceiling. My everything hurts from that.
- Install storage racks
- Move tire rack & hanging storage rack
- Build cabinets

A "couple" items still on the to-do list:
- Install new lights
- Paint trim around door into house
- Build slide out drawers for narrow cabinet
- Install cabinet tops (need more 1/8" ply)
- Build cabinet doors
- Install remaining floor tiles
- Put up backsplash, which is a 1/8" thick opaque polypropylene sheet to make sure the wall doesn't get nasty
- Trim where the drywall meets the foundation
- I plan on mounting some halved pool noodles or something similar to act a cushion in case of errant door swings
- Build a cover for the ducting and plumbing for the tankless water heater
- Replace the overhead garage door opener for a wall mounted jackshaft style
- Install pulley systems for ladder storage
- Hang car posters & pictures
- Sell all of the car parts
- Get a post-covid19 full body massage

The Wife's car has always been inside. I could shoehorn the BMW in there when it's in town pre-organization, now it would fit no problem. I especially like my ARB bumper pallet "shelf"
lol
What you are doing is worlds above my mess, I barely had the motivation to do this. I would like to do a floor.

That pallet shelf is pretty cool, as is the red Porsche tool box.

Looking fanfuckingtasting M!
Given that you're creating your own fucking CABINETS, I'm surprised you settled for those metal railings instead of just creating all the railings with wood and 4x4 posts instead I love the metal and wood look though so probably a design choice in play there..
Loving the racedicks tiles!!!

Thanks man! It was definitely a design choice on the railings. I love wood and metal - if I could've done the cabinets in a similar fashion, I would've.

I figured because you're definitely more than capable of making it yourself
I love the wood/metal look as well... I currently have a bench project where I need to make 4x4 legs... was Tempted to see if I could maybe buy some 4x4 steel square tubing and just use those as legs instead
