Chipmunks digging under sidewalk

I've got chipmunks doing extensive excavation in my landscaping, including under my front sidewalk. They have emptied out an area that appears to be about a foot deep underneath it.

I am going to fill it in -- I was thinking of using coarse gravel to discourage the little bastiches from digging under there again.

Does anyone else have any better suggestions for preventing damage to my sidewalk? I don't think it's practical to get rid of them because they've pretty much moved into our neighborhood.

The only way to discourage them is to get rid of them... I've got some chipmunks (only see them once or twice a year), but they don't seem to be doing much damage to the yard. I've thought about picking up a live trap (havahart model 0705) to take care of 'em...

We've been trapping them with a Havahart and taking them to the local forest preserve where they can become hawk dinner, but it hasn't put a dent in them, except temporarily. Then new ones move in. It's like trying to control the local rabbit population.

When i was a kid i would put the water hose into their hole and flush them out.

I was a prick.

I was doing that yesterday, spraying the hose where I saw the little fooker run under the sidewalk, and I noticed that no matter where I aimed it there was no splashback. So I took a closer look and found out just how much excavating they had done under the concrete.

Despite your self-assessment, I don't think I'm a prick. When it comes to rodents, you just have to ask yourself "What would Carl Spangler do?"

The right amount of propane mixed with the existing air should make for a nice concussive blast.

That movie was the first thing I thought of(I didn't remember the name, though). Really, I'd try some gravel to discourage them from digging. Just remember, it could be worse - my Mom has bears running through her yard!

gopher smoke bombs just like the fireworks variety but bigger. Smokes em out good and makes the hole stink like a smoke bomb they will move on. also, generous amounts of hot pepper powder can influence all sorts of animals

Update:

They're still around. I just fill in under the concrete slab once a year to keep it in one piece. Here's a picture of the little bugger.

have you tried those pellets? I used them to get rid of some critters that were digging up my lawn and they worked well!

It's such a cute tarantula.

Maybe this one will change Jefford's mind.

In season, I kill 1-2 per week and the supply is endless. They are very destructive, think of them as "rat with racing stripes"

Our UPS guy leaves a dog treat on top of packages when he drops them on the front porch. I always know there's something there because I hear the dog whining at the door as she watches a chipmunk chow her treat.

I had chipmunks tunneling under the main stoop. I dug up around it and put double chicken wire. They stopped going under, had a few holes for a little while, but they gave up.

Learn something new everyday. I have never thought of chipmonks as destructive.

Get a hawk. That would be cool.

What if you wait until they're under there and then fill in their holes with dirt! On a side note I laughed at almost every post in this thread
