Average cost of window replacement?

just got a quote to replace the windows in my house... and i thought it was a bit high for wholesale vinyl replacements... they will be energy efficient but worked out to be just under $375 per window installed on average... i've got 26 windows so the quote came out to just under $10k... that will include removal and disposal of the old windows...

is it just me or does this seem high?

For 26 windows that doesn't seem too bad.

I know nothing about this, it's just my gut feeling. I could be totally wrong.

My inlaws just got their whole house replaced. They went with Rosati. I'm not sure if they are just local or not but they are very reputable around here. They got nice double panes and it came out to around $450/window installed with tax...

Seems like a good price to me. We are getting 8 windows done and we're closer to $450/window as well...

Cost is dependent on two things. Which window you are buying, and installation. Brand/Quailty of window will affect price to so it's hard to tell if you got a good price or not as the windows may be a POS.

I think with windows you definitely need multiple quotes. I've been wanting to do this to my house for a few years but am hesitant.

Thanks for everyone for their input, parents got a big reno coming up so good to see how much windows are ballpark wise.

Now, I have a question: vinyl versus aluminum?

Ours are wood on the inside (to match the casings, etc) and vinyl on the outside... which are then painted to match the exterior trim.

I would estimate ~ $100-$150 per window for installation + cost of window BUT keep in mind whoever does the installation may be marking up the price of the window.

If they are standard size replacement windows and you are moderately handy I highly recommend installing them yourself. I did 22 windows in about 3 days with a helper.

Just my

Aren't permits and inspections required for this? If so, was that included in the cost?

You should not need a permit provided you are not altering the framing of the original opening.

Replacement windows = no permit
Replacing 2 small windows with a large bay window = permit

Big difference between "replacement" windows and "new" windows AFAIK.

Correct. Most people do replacement windows.

Replacing an existing window with a new construction window i.e. "new window" requires removal of the existing window frame, sills, etc. A replacement window sits inside the frame of the existing window. You remove the two window panels (if double hung) and the tracks that the windows slide on. What's left is the existing window frame. Pop in the replacement window, caulk, some screws, and you're done.

Seems reasonable to me...that's about what I paid per window when I replaced them on my old house.

thanks Doop... so I called out the guy who did the windows on my old house... he came the next day, took measurements and had a sample of the window... he was almost a grand more than the first quote I got so I was straight up with him and told him the # of my first quote... he asked the same question, did the other guy say what brand windows you will get, and he did not... so he said that is important... so we went back and forth a few times and I got him to match the price... since I know the quality of his work I went with him... 2 wks to manufacture the window (in the good ol USA) and he should have them installed the first week of June (as long as it is a sunny day)... i'm also having him do some framing for the breezeway I plan on converting into a pantry/mudroom... i'll post pictures...

if you want him to come out and give you a quote, he is based in East Brunswick and does all of North and Central Jersey... he does good work and you can negotiate with him...

+1... in my old house I did aluminum... but now its all about vinyl as they are lighter and have better insulation properties... so this new house will get vinyl
