Drawers are just pieces right now. Since I need to finish the fronts before I assemble them, I'm trying to get the finish just right before I do them as I will finish them, then machine them (so I have finish-free gluing surfaces) and then assemble them.

Quick update -- color is fixed on the table, just need to put a couple coats of varnish on it. Then it's on to the drawers.

I completed the table right around the New Year, but just moved it up to its final location and dusted it tonight. Here it is:

Thanks guys. If I were to do it over, I'd use dovetail joinery on the drawers. I didn't care for those drawer rabbet joints.

I'm probably not going to store anything in it. I'm just in charge of building it, not filling it. The wife will find some use for it, I'm sure.

Damn nice job. I wish I had skills like that. Being good with a computer really isn't that impressive.

Mike - That is gorgeous. Ethan Allen and Pottery Barn have nothing on you.

I know you put a lot of time into it, but what did the materials run (not including the prawer pulls?

Better yet, how much would it cost me for you to build and ship one to CA?

LOL I was wondering the same thing! Though, shipping sounds quite expensive.

Wow. It looks better than a store bought item. Very impressive.

Your workshop is awesome, too. Is that all in your garage?

Most of the materials were cherry extras from other projects that I had laying around the shop. I did have to buy some baltic birch plywood and poplar though. The cost of the materials depends a lot on the wood selection. Oak is cheaper than maple is cheaper than cherry is cheaper than walnut is cheaper than mahogany.

With the cherry I used, materials were probably $500.

The time I would spend depends a lot on the finish. A three step process like the dye/stain/varnish like I did was pretty time intensive. A natural oil finish would be much faster.

I'd probably charge $40-$50 per hour for labor, and figure 80 hours of shop time, so Pottery Barn and Ethan Allen would probably start to have something on me!

As for shipping, I have no idea how I'd do it. It'd have to go by truck and I don't know of a shipping company around here skilled enough to package it up. Shipping costs would be dwarfed by the materials+labor.

Basement shop. I have about 1/3 of my basement dedicated to it.

I know wood prices have been going up, but $500 worth of materials alone? Damn.

As impressive as your work is, I may have to stick with Ikea for a little while longer.

There are reasons good furniture is expensive. I don't have easy access to wood at wholesale; most of the cherry I used I bought at a sawmill in Ohio about 10 years ago for half of what it costs locally plus the cost of a trailer to haul it back here.

Nice. Sounds like a home away from home inside your home.

Yes. It's my cave, and no one really wants to spend any time in there except for me. Though sometimes the war department wants me to spend more time in there than I do.

Dado blade on the table saw and a lot of test cuts.

crazy bastard..!

I'm going to try it out. mebbe Is the joint sturdy? Just wood glue or were you able to get some finishing nails in there? Any reason you selected the dado blade?

The joint is sturdy as long as it's tight. I just wood glued it and clamped it.

The pieces mate up, but the pieces can slide relative to each other. Made glue-up a bit of a pain. A dovetail of course goes exactly into place and has a ton of surface area to glue.

I used the dado blade (rather than a router) for a couple of reasons: it cuts cleaner across the grain without burning than a router, and the miter gauge and fence on my table saw was a better setup for making the cuts than I have on my router table.

Like I said, if I were doing it again I'd whip out my Leigh jig and dovetail them.
