Art or wall decorations?

To anyone who puts art on their walls, where did you get it? How much would I expect to spend, typically? Looking to decorate my walls with some good stuff but not sure where to start looking. Suggestions?

We've gotten all of ours at Target or Home Goods.

Best value is in giclees, which are painted over prints that look like real paintings. Their cost is about 1/3rd in between prints and paintings.

Also, we have found some great painters on Etsy, where you could get say a $500 painting looks like a $2k+ painting from a high end gallery. Here is one guy based out of israel that does cool abstract stuff. We have three pieces that we are going to request from him. https://www.etsy.com/shop/KobyFeldmos

Although if you are just looking to fill up blank wall space, and are a bit indifferent, then theres plenty of stuff in the $50-100 range from various online vendors. It is usually cheaper to get a stretched canvas print over a 3D frame from Target, etc, then order a nice poster and frame.

Depends what you want.

I collected a few vintage produce crate labels and framed them up with various frames from IKEA for one wall. Another wall has framed posters from wine festivals I went to back in the day.

The wife found some metal geometrical colored, uh, thing that hangs in the space above the fireplace mantle. I think she got it off Overstock.com.

She also found some planetary images on a NASA imagery website, cropped them as desired, and sent them off to be printed at some photo place. We picked up some janky ass nautical themed pictures with pretty nice frames for super cheap at Hobby Lobby or the similar; opened them and kept the frames for the planetary images.

I do photography so I send my own images to an online printer for canvas prints. They look good.

I put up stuff that has meaning to me. I dont want generic filler. Be it my own work, or work of my friends, or a painting I had commissioned for my wife.

Most of our decorative stuff comes from At Home (it's like a cheaper, larger TJ Max/Home Goods), Kirklands, or Target. We also have large photos of mine that I had printed on metal. Really though, it comes down to what you want the theme to be - that will dictate the best place to get stuff.

Etsy and Wayfair have good stuff too.

I have some big prints framed too, but custom framing is $$$. Then again, you probably make your own frames.

Sure do! A large size, 20x30 matted to 24x36, frame in solid walnut would cost me ~$35 in wood and ~$50 in glass.

depends on a few things, are you looking are stuff that you don't care about and just want to throw up on a wall, or something that you can make a conversation piece out of? or a piece to match your furniture/curtains, etc?

Personal suggestion, first think about the things that are going to be somewhat concrete like sofa color, wall color, etc. Then find colors that should flow well with them. Once you have your colors figured out, you have to pick out what goes where! If you are going with a modern theme, you obviously won't want to have a mona-lisa replica hanging up. If you do modern theme try F1 car if you like cars, Jets if you like aviation, etc.

Kohls and target usually have some decent stuff that can last a few years. Ebay is hit or miss, esp on prints. I've found Etsy to be a bit better, and honestly talking to a stall that sells paintings at flea markets can be amazing!

If I had my way, there'd be a lot of aviation & automotive themes in the house.

For our bedroom, we got some big, cool abstract art piece on a canvas for cheap. We both love it.

Depends on the wall. If it is a main wall like in your living room where you entertain guests and etc., I would suggest investing in a conversation piece or something valuable. I picked up a rather large art piece by Peter Lik for my living room above my fireplace mantle which I've had for almost 10 years. I recall it was around $2K. It works even after moving to a new place but I knew I was buying this for the rest of my life.

For the front foyer, I have something more modern and this one was not super pricey but purchased from Crate & Barrel (~$700) -- a place I enjoy their designs and overall look.

For everywhere else, it's stuff we find here and there over the years that we've accumulated. I try to buy original artwork but prints can work too if it's in the right frame. Here are some of the artwork around the house (they are all under $1K) for reference ...The plant photos are IKEA (so dirt cheap) and the black and whites are originals I bought from a gallery in Vancouver but was not too expensive.

Hope that helps. It's so subjective though...so, good luck.
