My sister had a new deck built a couple of months ago and I wanted to get her a really nice gas grill w/ side burner.

Does anybody have experience with them?

Which ones do you recommend?

Vermont Castings, Modern Home Products and Weber make very good natual gas grills.

I recently got a Vermont Castings. Love it.

For the money, they are good, but they are no where near THE BEST. And charcol is pretty good. Gives the food some flavor.

Expect to pay around $800 (pedestal model hooked up to a gas line) if you want a side burner.

I got my Weber from a local Appliance shop. They only sell the VC and Weber grilles. I liked the fact that they only sold good stuff...

I didn't shop at a box store (sears, lowes, homedepot) because the little guy usually has a better deal at the same price. I got my grille setup and delivered for free, and my Weber has stainless grilles instead of the cast iron ones that the webers at the box stores have (for the same price).

EDIT: Oh, and I got the cover of my weber in Green in stead of Black like everyone else has (could have gotten it in blue too).

Weber quality has gone downhill steadily in the last few years.
Ever since they cheapened their product and started selling everywhere from Home Depot to Wal-Mart.
A lot of people love to say “I have a Weber”.
It used to mean something a few years back when they were quality 800-1000 dollar grills. Now you can get them for under 200 bucks.

I recommend Napoleon. I’ve had mine since about 1998 and it still runs like new.

let me tell you from experience. my family has a big expensive gas grill and a $40 weber. the weber makes the food tastes 10x better but it is also 10x work. its kinda nice to have both but for the price, a gas grill is pretty useless. you can do the samething in the kitchen.

I have a weber, I like it, it gets used AT LEAST 4 nights a week for the last 3 years straight. It's held up well, it wasn't a super nice one, cost around $300. The paint on the inside is starting to peel but that is normal. Also the front burner doesn't kick high flame but they'll cover a new burner under warranty.

I bought a Weber when we moved into the new house. The local Propane place overfilled my tank and it froze when I tried to use the grill. I called Weber's 800 number at like 8pm and they picked right up and told me exactly what was wrong (I'm no Hank Hill when it comes to grills ) I use it just about every night that weather will permit and LOVE it. It's a Genesis Silver...cost me a little over 3 bills.

I am a professional Chef for Marriott Hotels. I can tell you the preferred grill under 1000 is the Holland. It can do everything you could possibly dream of. It grills, smokes, roasts, steams, bakes. I have done steaks, whole hams, briskets, turkeys, chickens, cakes, eggs, everything. You put a bone in chicken breast on it, never turn it, come back in an hour and it done and perfectly brown. It is the only grill in the world that will not flare up and burn your food. Take it from me, I gave away an 800 Weber, so I had a reason to buy this one. You can get a base model from 599 all the way up to SS at 1200. PM me if you want more info.

Sorry....Nothing in writing.
Just personal experience talking to friends that bought them and they started to fall apart in 2-3 years.
I also know others that have Weber’s that are 10+ years old and still doing fine.

And when you see something that was only available in a specialty shop 5-years ago for 800-1000 dollars suddenly show up at Wal-Mart for 399, something’s got to be different.

Off topic, but same theory.
My one friend bought a John Deere tractor for like 4-grand a few years ago from a certified distributor.
The very next year they have one with nearly the same specs at Home Depot for 2500.
He took me up there and pointed out the many differences in the Home Depot version.
Except for the pretty green paint and one number different in the model number, it was an entirely different unit.
But people will buy them up because of the name.

Here's the differences I saw between the Weber at a local "mom and pop" type place and the at a box store...

1) Stainless Steel Grilling surface vs. cast iron (HDepot) or porcelain covered steel (Sears).

2) Stainless Steel flavor bars vs. porcelain covered steel.

3) The grille housing is the same, but the base (or stand) is different. Boxed cross members and sheet metal for the bottom "shelf" vs. wire rack type thing.

4) Free setup and Delivery vs. here's a box, and you're on your own...

I'm happy with my Weber Genesis B for $350. If I grilled more, I'd probably would have spent more for another make of grille, but for me the Weber is fine.

I was looking at the $159-$269 grilles and the weber for another $100 is a nice step up for the price.

Kinda what I thought...

Weber's quality is as good as it's ever been. They have always had a wide range of grills, and the more your spent, the more your got.

And, if you had an introductory series Weber grill from 10 years ago, you can still get parts for it, some still under warranty.

Weber has a very nice warranty, not the best, but decent. So any grill falling apart in 2-3 years will be replaced, no questions asked. I believe there is a lifetime guarentee on the housing, it's the burners and grills that have a limited, 7year warranty I believe. The BEST grill by far in terms of warranty is the modern home product line. Anything, and I mean anything that ever fails on the grill will be replaced at no cost to the consumer. But they carry a slight premium to them... I believe their stainless model would run you close to $1000.


While I haven't heard of any horrible Weber stories, I'm sure there are a few. But with anything you buy, there are always dissatisfied customers.

I'd have to check my owners manual, but I do know that different peices are warranteed for different lengths of time depending on the material.

Stainless steel grille surfaces are covered for 7 or 10 years, while the cast iron/steel are only covered for 5 years IIRC (on the genesis models).

I have a Weber Genesis Silver C (3 burners inside, one side burner) with cast iron grates that I got from Home Depot about 3 years ago. Haven't had a bit of problem with it, I use it qute a bit and haven't yet had to replace a thing. It's still solid, and I have to say I've definitely gotten every penny of the $450 I spent on it. For the price, it's a pretty solid buy.

If you want to go a bit nicer (and more expensive), then Vermont Castings seems be be the pick-of-choice.

In terms of quality, I have no doubts that Weber has a wide range of products for different retailers. I wouldn't trust a Weber bought from Wal Mart, for example, because I know that the manufacturers will cut corners to cut costs.

Whatever you get, make sure to get either cast iron or the porcellan-coated cast iron grates for the best experience, grill/sear marks, etc.
